This is also a Banglist topic, in a way... in the 1880s, when work on the monument was resumed, the ropes had rotted. So, strong but light strings were tied to doves, which were released inside the unfinished obelisk. They flew up and started to fly away; they were shot. The strings were thereby put up and over, and were used to pull one rope, which was used to pull additional ropes, and thereby work could continue.
