Your baby girl is precious! As is her older sister.

Congrats to you... . You know you have a handful in later life. I'm smiling here because I've already gone through that/still am going through that.

I swear when I leave Grandmother's visit and get on the elevator, I feel like Linda Blair...like my head is spinning around and around and around.

It's crazy, and it's funny, and it's gut-wrenching sad.

Remember the funny.
Life is sad.

Period, but ya have to remember the funny....

Like the guy who came up to the 23 hour observation psyche unit...
In August...
On a bicycle...
At 2 am

Nekkid....

And said he thought he might need to be admitted.

They agreed and they did.

My "godfather" had knee surgery last Monday. He is a very proud man and I could tell he was uncomfortable having me see him in the hospital. So, I called him every day and let him be. He went home yesterday and when he's ready for visitors - he'll let me know.

It's very difficult for a proud man (or a proud woman in Granny's case) to be unable to take care of themselves as they had for so many years. It's also hard for them to be seen that way by the people around them.

As much as I wanted to see him - I knew that he had boundaries and I needed to understand that and let him be.

LOL...like the woman sitting in her wheelchair scooting it around the common area with her feet, and telling all the other old folks to follow her...it was kind of like a congo line...just in wheelchairs.

Another time, she picked up the sleeve of the woman sitting next to her, and wiped her nose.

I fell in the floor with that one!

That is a fine line. As long as you are sure they're getting good care and aren't lonely, that's the right thing to do.

But I've dealt with so many elderly/MI/MR that are abandoned like puppies by their families. Nothing will break your heart quicker than the person who gets dressed everyday because X is coming to see them...

OR begs you to make a phone call to a relative that has cut them out of their lives....

Or is someone who was once very dignified and sentient, or a great artist, or an outgoing person who crumbles away in mind and body before your eyes.

The best facilities are not those that require big bucks, have nice furniture or an exec chef. They are the facilities where family members are involved, visit often and put up a stink if their loved one doesn't get good care.

Look,
Next Halloween, go there with a big basket of goodies (candy, quarters for the vending machines)for trick or treat.

They do it in our buildings and it is a hoot! They all come down the hall in a line. We get to dress up in costume and they do too.

yes, but you skewed the other baby in the pic of the two babies...that's confusing me, but I'm easy to confuse.'

I'm off duty. No telling what I will come up with at this point.

Hubbys granny is in a nursing home. 93 years old and is now blind, deaf completely in one ear, and 70% in the other. Her oldest son (hubbys father who is 73 himself) goes to see her daily. At least once a month we drive up to see her and to sing her favorite gospel songs.

When I leave there my heart is in my throat. When I walk through the dining area where they have all of their elderly sitting waiting to be fed, I choke back. My mother-in-law and I try to speak and touch each of them just to let them know that even though we are strangers, we are still praying for them.
