Coach Holmgren Apologizes to Tagliabue (Steeler/Seahawk Alert)

Dear Mr. Tagliabue,

I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize to you and the league for my intemperate remarks at our ceremony at Qwest Field concerning the officiating during the Superbowl.

On Monday, just one short day after “losing” (oops) the game, I was still burned about the outcome, and I had consumed about a pound of bad jumbo shrimp for lunch, my stomach was churning, and it was just a bad day all around. I came home from Detroit, our cat was missing from the house, the Governor’s dog was hit by a car, and she was blaming me for that. Just real bad all around, Paul.

Paul, I was still stinging from calls that went against our team. It seemed like the bad calls were stacking up as high as the Space Needle.

I’ve always been known as a good and decent man in the community. Well, perhaps except for the time I borrowed my neighbor’s Rototiller to do that work on the Church rose garden .................. heck I didn’t see that rock ............. like I didn’t see that sneaky Steeler trick play coming. My neighbor told me he wouldn’t be using that Rototiller for a good long time, I thought he’d never noticed it was broken. Wosrt thing I ever did, Paul......... until now.

I feel as badly about my comment to the fans, “ "I didn't know we were going to have to play the guys in the striped shirts as well”, as I did about giving my neighbor back his mangled Rototiller. Come to think about it, that Rototiller was as busted as our defense on that Willie Parker blast right through our defense.

In closing, you must know that I’m still crushed about the loss and my words, but if you and the league are going to fine me for my perverse and untoward words, I ask you to please take into consideration that at least I didn’t refer to the officials as zebras. That should count for something.......................... and, Paul, am I off the competition committee?

Regards,

Mike Holmgren

"The most common quote I've heard from a lot of places is to the effect that you (refs) don't take points off the board by calling incidental contact, especially in a big game like a Super Bowl. "

And I've read over and over that if the receiver pushes off the defender to create separation and give himself more room to catch the ball it is called offensive pass interference-and if he does it three feet from a referee with an unobstructed view of the situation, he's going to get the flag every time, Super Bowl or no Super Bowl.

BTW, I've never heard the "especially in the SB" idea before-it's your belief that the officials ought to be a little more lax with the rules because it's the SB? Yeah, that sounds fair.

Well, whatever, you know what they say, "Opinions are like..."

Nice pics on your page, except you're a bit to crusty to have a niece like that! I know you're proud.

Guess what? My niece is from Georgia.

Here's my opinion on the falcons. No team was more "selected" than the falcons. All I heard all year was how great M. Vick was. The greatest scrambler in the history of the game. The guy who can do it all. The guy who can get it done. On the team that was on National TV how many games last season?

And how many games did the "selected" falcons win all last year? Eight. How many games did the Steelers win this season? Fifteen. How many games did the Falcons lose this year? Eight. How many games did the Steelers lose this year? Five. Steelers - 15 and 5. Falcons - 8 and 8.

And you wonder why the Steelers made it to the Super Bowl and won it.

And you wonder why the falcons weren't even in the playoffs.

What's the matter, the officials didn't hand enough games to the falcons to suit you? They tried, Lord knows they tried. But the falcons just couldn't get the job done. Even lost to the crummy Eagles.

We'll see how far the "selected" falcons get next year. They will be very lucky to even make the playoffs, and I assure you that they will not make the Super Bowl.

I'm crusty? Find me talking trash on someone who hasn't talked trash on me first, or my team. You come out of the woodwork to try to deflated the Steeler's victory and I'm crusty?

Good morning, Petronski!

It's a bit off the thread topic, but I just heard on KFI 640AM in Los Angeles (during the break in Rush's show) that Tagliabue is retiring soon. I guess that's what Dr. Rice has been wanting to do, if she's to be believed.

Had you heard this?

I hadn't heard anything about it until I read your post.
