Dear Mr. Tagliabue,
Id like to take this opportunity to apologize to you and the league for my intemperate remarks at our ceremony at Qwest Field concerning the officiating during the Superbowl.
On Monday, just one short day after losing (oops) the game, I was still burned about the outcome, and I had consumed about a pound of bad jumbo shrimp for lunch, my stomach was churning, and it was just a bad day all around. I came home from Detroit, our cat was missing from the house, the Governors dog was hit by a car, and she was blaming me for that. Just real bad all around, Paul.
Paul, I was still stinging from calls that went against our team. It seemed like the bad calls were stacking up as high as the Space Needle.
Ive always been known as a good and decent man in the community. Well, perhaps except for the time I borrowed my neighbors Rototiller to do that work on the Church rose garden .................. heck I didnt see that rock ............. like I didnt see that sneaky Steeler trick play coming. My neighbor told me he wouldnt be using that Rototiller for a good long time, I thought hed never noticed it was broken. Wosrt thing I ever did, Paul......... until now.
I feel as badly about my comment to the fans, "I didn't know we were going to have to play the guys in the striped shirts as well, as I did about giving my neighbor back his mangled Rototiller. Come to think about it, that Rototiller was as busted as our defense on that Willie Parker blast right through our defense.
In closing, you must know that Im still crushed about the loss and my words, but if you and the league are going to fine me for my perverse and untoward words, I ask you to please take into consideration that at least I didnt refer to the officials as zebras. That should count for something.......................... and, Paul, am I off the competition committee?
Regards,
Mike Holmgren
As I said before, even as a rabid (but very honest) Steeler fan, when the ref came running in from the sidelines and belatedly threw his arms up to indicate a TD, that looked real weird even to me. He was late. He seemed to make his decision after Ben had landed and then moved his arm and the ball over the line. That belated call would have pissed me off too if I had been a Seattle fan. It looked like he made his decision at the wrong time, even to me. Heck, I went into halftime feeling very fortunate.
I can see how that call would smell (stink) to fans across the country, because it looked really shaky even to me.
But ....... as I said, I've seen the real film this week (stopped and started 100 times) with all the pros at their home, and the ball, at least half of the ball, was over (above) the goal line before Ben was pulled by the legs from the right and pushed from the front backwards (into the frame you show).
It was really a TD,........ and it was only third down. Chances are the Steelers, if they were forced to would have hammered it in on 4th down. They have shown that they do it when they need to.
Show me. I wish I had recorded the game as it is very simple to get a HD frame saved and posted. As of yet, every frame I have seen doesn't show it. The full motion video is unneccessary, what is needed is the single frame that shows the most forward progress. I thought the one I posted was it, but if there is a better one, why has not one person on the internet posted it. Really, it is not that hard if you had it recorded.
And I don't.
I appreciate your honesty, and I wish I had recorded it myself with my HD DVR. It is really a piece of cake to get the best frame and post it. That is why I am surprised someone who has recorded it hasn't done it yet. Out of the stuff that has been posted, it just doesn't show it. Congradualations. Pittsburgh had by far the toughest road to the Superbowl and won. Beating Cincinnati, Indy, Denver and Seattle, the four best teams during the season. That is really quite an accomplishment.
Always Right: "If you noticed, it was a Steeler fan who posted this thread to bring this dead horse topic up, not me."
********
Hey dope, I did not post, as you incorrectly claim, "this thread to bring this dead horse TD topic up"! Got it?
YOU started that Ben TD crap all over again.... as usual! You are a liar or you are just plain stupid. Take your pick.
I started this thread for just a little fun, a little needling of a coach, a good coach, a very good man who I have always really appreciated, who, imo, spoke about something and was out of line. The NFL will let him know just how out of line he was.
So, try to tell the truth like FReepers usually do or just be quiet. YOU "brought this dead horse TD topic up", and you're wrong about it too.
Got it?
I don't like this "fighting" at all, but there is such a thing as honesty........ and I honor it.

Snow on the way, P.
LOL...... thanks you said it a lot quicker than me.
Thanks again. Truth is truth!
Call or email Tunch Ilkin and Craig Wolfley here in Pittsburgh at The Locker Room. They have great film! They only played in the league about 24 years between them.
They may be able to tell you where you can buy game film with the correct angles if you need it.
Tell Tunch that you want to get your Mojo right. He'll get a kick out of that.
I never spoke of any particular questionable call in the posted thread, completely avoided them on purpose. It was all light and whimsical (Rototillers, rose gardens, missing cat) until you black-hearted jerks started flapping your needy unhappy lips!
Why is it so damn hard for a FReeper to just say, "I was wrong"? That's not so hard.
Yoi, double yoi!
;-)
The Frenchman Frenchy Fuqua will take this one to the grave too.
LOL.
But me, I can't even post a graphic (no don't give me instructions, I don't even understand the nomenclature,......... and the only reason I know that word is because my grandfather told it to me back in the 50's............... it just stuck with me.
Yoi!
****
Spring Training, anyone??????????
It must have been a touchdown!
(he said with child-like innocence)
And then they kicked the extra point to make the touchdown worth seven points.
ROFL!
I came down here with my eight year old neice to see what replies were on this thread ................ she saw your funny yellow smiley face and went nuts with laughter.
Time for macaroni and cheese.
Thanks...... that was a riot.
I sent an email to a friend of mine in Baltimore last night with links to 10 FR threads about the Super Bowl. He read some of them and here is what he had to say.
"Geez. I didn't think the officiating was THAT bad. Most calls were at least close. A few could maybe have NOT been called, but all-in-all I don't think the game would have turned out much differently. That bottom line is...that game was lost because the Seattle receivers dropped so many balls that were right in their hands, whereas Heinz Ward seemed to catch whatever was in the neighborhood. The Steelers did have the crowd on their side. Sometimes that affects the officials as well. They like throwing a flag that makes a big cheer. But hey, they sell Super Bowl tickets on the West Coast too.
Once again the 'Free Republic' site disappoints me. Seems to have more than their fair share of idiots. They should rename it to the 'Free Blowhard' SIte".
Nah, you're being too harsh on FR.
It's just a story of a few folks who really don't know football and the rules, or perhaps had a few bucks on the wrong team with the points, or just in general like to make a stink.
Some of these folks may just be the same ones who whine when it rains on Halloween and they have to walk the kids around the neighborhood under an umbrella.
Whiners are whiners............ a little like winners are winners.
;-)
Whatever, It's still FR........... the best site in the country.
>Once again the 'Free Republic' site disappoints me. Seems to have more than their fair share of idiots. They should rename it to the 'Free Blowhard' Site".<
The above statement was made by my friend, not me. He only sees things from FR that I send him links to. He is not a FReeper, nor does he visit this site. His comments are in regards to his viewing of some Super Bowl threads and comments that I sent him. This is the first stuff I have sent him from FR in a long time, over a year.
Before the Super Bowl threads, I would have disagreed with my friend about FR having more than their fair share of idiots. However, I don't think that the site should be renamed. Nor do I feel it is a bad site.
..... good fishin' to you.
It's not just Free Republic. We're a nation of complainers. Steeler hater John Madden fueled the fire during the Super bowl and it's continued.
Isn't it odd. Heath Miller is called for offensive pass interference, in my eyes it was a marginal call at best, but nobody mentions it. And on and on it goes.
Pittsburgh is a VERY small city, about 350,000. This has to be a nightmare for the elitists in this country, this little TV market winning the big prize.
Oh, and just to rub more salt into the wounds, we host this year's Baseball All Star game, where the cameras will surely pan over to Heinz Field, home of the Super Bowl Champs.
The race is now on for the sixth Super Bowl Victory.
I see you get it. Very good. Posting comments simply to disrupt is a very foolish way to act. But the ones who have done this have smoked themselves out. Now we know who they are, at least some of them.
Steelers may repeat next year. They have the youngest QB to ever win a Super Bowl and some very good talent surrounding him. His record in two years is what, 27-5 or something like that. No other QB in the history of the NFL can match that, at least for the first two years. If Ben would have been 3 for 23 in passing in the SB and the Steelers won anyway, Ben still winds up with a "W". That's the only stat that counts in the end. This guy is a winner.
Steelers overall 16-2 last year and 15-5 this year. Who had a better record this year? Colts are 13-4. I think Seattle went 15-4.
Thank God for the officials handing the Steelers two great seasons, huh?
LOL.
Let's just hope when and if they pan over to Heinz Field they don't play a couple of the questionable calls too. If they do they could start with the illegal "pick" play that gave Seattle their only TD, then show the real fumble by Jerremy Stevens over the middle, then the clip of Roethlisberger in the back....... then they can show us the offensive interference in the endzone.
