Coach Holmgren Apologizes to Tagliabue (Steeler/Seahawk Alert)
Free Republic ^ | 2/09/06 | self

Dear Mr. Tagliabue,

I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize to you and the league for my intemperate remarks at our ceremony at Qwest Field concerning the officiating during the Superbowl.

On Monday, just one short day after “losing” (oops) the game, I was still burned about the outcome, and I had consumed about a pound of bad jumbo shrimp for lunch, my stomach was churning, and it was just a bad day all around. I came home from Detroit, our cat was missing from the house, the Governor’s dog was hit by a car, and she was blaming me for that. Just real bad all around, Paul.

Paul, I was still stinging from calls that went against our team. It seemed like the bad calls were stacking up as high as the Space Needle.

I’ve always been known as a good and decent man in the community. Well, perhaps except for the time I borrowed my neighbor’s Rototiller to do that work on the Church rose garden .................. heck I didn’t see that rock ............. like I didn’t see that sneaky Steeler trick play coming. My neighbor told me he wouldn’t be using that Rototiller for a good long time, I thought he’d never noticed it was broken. Wosrt thing I ever did, Paul......... until now.

I feel as badly about my comment to the fans, “ "I didn't know we were going to have to play the guys in the striped shirts as well”, as I did about giving my neighbor back his mangled Rototiller. Come to think about it, that Rototiller was as busted as our defense on that Willie Parker blast right through our defense.

In closing, you must know that I’m still crushed about the loss and my words, but if you and the league are going to fine me for my perverse and untoward words, I ask you to please take into consideration that at least I didn’t refer to the officials as zebras. That should count for something.......................... and, Paul, am I off the competition committee?

Regards,

Mike Holmgren

Leave me out of this. You will notice that the NFL Ping List is staying away from these threads. We DO NOT want to be associated with the trash talk and garbage.

May I say please, not to be argumentative at all, but I really did just post this little bit of writing because I thought it was funny.

Mike Holmgren has always been a very good man, his wife does wonderful work all over the world, he just, in my opinion, spoke out and deserved a little needling.

There was absolutely no attempt from me at "trash talk or garbage". Please understand that.

The Seattle team and players are talented, good guys. From all the interviews of them that I saw during the two week run-up to the game, the players were the utmost gentlemen. They seemed quite intelligent and wholesome. So, just to kindly inform you, I only wrote it for a little laugh, because in all truth, coach Holmgren was wrong to play that card in public. It was low, too low an unfitting of his normally fine character.

He really should apologize to the Steelers organization and to the league for his words............... at least he didn't call them zebras.

;-)

Penns won in 1991 and 1992. ...... What the heck was I thinking? Must have been just the World Series and Super Bowl one after the other.

It may have been that 10-11 years of heavy drinking.

Next up - the Boys of Summer. ...and hoping the Mariners and Pirates can improve upon their last-place performances of last year.

I gotcha. I'm going to get out my old Green Weenie for the Pirate Opener.

So what if Ben is a couple inches short of the goal line, what difference does it make?

The goalie is good. He just needs some defense men to play in front of him.

There supposedly is a plethora of very good young players on the Penguins. I know little about hockey, but the smart hockey people around the league seem to think that the Penguins have some of the best young talent in the league. And, if they keep losing at the rate they are now, I guess they'll draft another great young star.

And yes, the goalie is good........... he just needs some support, but at least as things are right now, he's getting a lot of practice.

We must have seen 3,000 derogatory posts on FR about the Steeler victory. To what point? Steeler fans would have been happy to move on, but we constantly had to defend our team and its victory

True..... and the important word there is "defend". We have only attempted to DEFEND against an unnecessary and unrelenting offense that has served to diminish the joy of a victory. That is all.

The Dems. and Gore did a very similar thing to G.W. and Republicans in November/December of 2000. It's just wrong, no matter the level. When one denigrates a supreme and difficult effort, that is just not right.

So really, let's just drop it and learn a little from it.

I've been a Penguins fan for a long time. So a bad record doesn't really bother me like it might other hockey fans.

I'm used to it. It sucks, but they're my team and I'm sticking with 'em.

The ref had a better angle and not one still frame.

But hey, don't let me stop you from whining. I'm really enjoying it now, 5 days later!

This thread should keep going till next season!

So what if Ben is a couple inches short of the goal line, what difference does it make?My problem is that I always think FReepers are intelligent.

Let me just tell you that Ben was further ahead a fraction of a second before that still. He was higher in the air and the ball was over (above) the goal line. Then he got shoved and pulled back to that point that you illustrate there. Even that picture is pretty darn close.

Now, that's the last time I'm going to explain that. I saw video of that play at a professional football player's home this past week. We stopped it at every point of progress. Their particular camera was right on the goal line. It was definitely a TD............... not that the truth means anything to some. Maybe on 4th down the Steelers could have run the ball past the back line.

You're a heck of a fan.

I used to love the Rickey Dinks back in the 50's. They were pretty bad too!

Danny Kravitz, a catcher around 1956, dropped three foul pop-ups in one inning one night at old Forbes Field.

I have been watching NFL football since I was 10 years old, for a period of 45 years now. When the AFL existed, I watched them play football too.

It is and was a rare game in pro football that the officials didn't either make a bad call, or a non-call (an obvious penalty that should have been called but wasn't).

Holding, for example, could be called on virtually every play. It isn't, but holding is often called at the most inopportune time. How many times have you spotted an offensive lineman holding and the official failed to call it?

I guess anyone who has been watching pro football for any length of time, or even for the past year, has seen the same thing.

So, is every win by every team in every game tainted because there was a bad call or a non-call in that game?

The detractors of Super Bowl XL would have us believe that this game was tainted by bad calls. If this is the case, then I think you could say that every win by every team is tainted for the same reason.

Further, if this is the case, what is the point of even having pro football teams play the game, if every game, not just Super Bowl XL, is tainted?
