Michaels not on new MNF team BY NEIL BEST STAFF WRITER February 8, 2006, 10:29 AM EST ESPN announced Wednesday that its Monday Night Football announcing team would be Mike Tirico on play-by-play with Joe Theismann and Tony Kornheiser as analysts. The news release made no mention of the man who was under contract to do play-by-play, Al Michaels, who had done that job on ABC's version of Monday Night Football. ESPN has an eight-year deal with the NFL to show Monday Night Football beginning this fall. Michaels was absent from the new release because he will not work for ESPN; he got out of his contract and widely is expected to be reunited with analyst John Madden on NBC's Sunday night package. Michaels also is out as the lead NBA announcer for ABC, a corporate sibling of ESPN. Mike Breen will replace him.

Summerall and Madden is still the best pairing to have been put on the air. Michaels and Madden have, what, two years together?

I agree. I am dating myself but I have listened to Al Michaels since the days when he was the voice of the Cincinnati Reds along with Joe Nuxhall.

The hardest part is not being able to listen to the radio while watching the game due to the 7 second delay!!!!

Boo hiss.

I'm glad they are going to keep the Sunday night game.

I was worried than when ESPN took over MNF, they might do something stupid like stop doing the Sunday night game.

The Sunday night games used to suck when they first started doing it with usually horrible matchups, but many now end up being great games with good teams and their is a cool different vibe when you have pro football played at night.

I'm starting to like Al Michaels. He is one of the few announcers that will comment on the NFL's silly policies. I think the network executives often try to censor any negative comments about league rules, because there is so much money involved.

During one recent game, the guys in the booth were talking about the third jersey color of the home team (I forget which team), saying they had home colors, away colors, and now the third "black" home jersey. Michaels correctly said it was, "merchandising run amok."

If I remember correctly, Michaels was one of the few people who pointed out that when Steve Mariuicci first became the Lions head coach, Mariucci assumed he could wear a business suit on the sidelines, only to be told by the league office that he had to wear NFL licensed merchandise. Can you imagine telling Vince Lombardi, Paul Brown, or Tom Landry that they had to wear sweatshirts for a game?

During last week's Super Bowl, Michaels talked about the crazy number of game balls used, saying a new ball was brought in for every play. He said veteran players told others to watch out for the slippery new balls. I just wish Michaels would have followed up by explaining the reason for getting so many specially marked commemorataive balls into the game. The implication is that the league sells these balls after the game. If so, then during the league's showcase game, profit is more important than good playing conditions.

I wish more announcers would be allowed to say what they think, instead of keeping to the company line. I used to think network NFL announcers sounded like sportscasters covering an event. Now they mostly sound like pitchmen promoting a product.

I miss Ray Scott...

I know it won't happen, but I wish they would can annoying suzy kobler and useless michelle tafoya.

I'm soo sick of the "we got to shove women on the sidelines" so we won't get sued for discrimination crap.

Thiesmann is horrible, but there is someone worse- well, 2 people. And ESPN managed to pick one of them in Kornheiser.

At least they didn't go with Dan Dierdorf.

Interesting Tom Landry mention.

Earlier this year, Michaels signed an 8 year, $32 million contract with ESPN for Monday Nights. That must have been before the Sunday Night situation developed because he wanted out ( and apparently got out) of his ESPN contract so he could go to NBC with Madden on Sunday nights.
