You are taking his remark out of context. Picture yourself, going for a touchdown, with guys coming at you from all sides. Your head is tucked, you're "flying" through the air, bodies are under you so you can't see the white chalk of the goal line, but the ball clears the plane. The ref sees it, the fans see it, pictures prove it. You made a touchdown! You come away and say, "Wow, I didn't think I got in." But you really did.
Then some sorehead Seattle fans keep quoting you saying that you didn't think you got in. How sad it would be. Wouldn't it?
Not to mention, it's best to be conservative in this case. Assume the worst: "I didn't get in" and start preparing for 4th down, so that you're not rushing once the call is made one way or another.
The ref saw it. Pittsburgh fans saw it. No one else did. Pictures don't prove it by a long shot.
