He said helmet wearing should be optional for motorcycle enthusiasts.

It may become optional, but it's kinda stupid to ride without a helmet - especially at highway speeds.

Oh - And I'm a rider, in case anyone wonders.

oh i agree!

my dad hit a nail and blew a tired on a highway entrance
ramp ... NOT top highway speed ... even in a helmet and full
leathers the leg that hit pavement looked like hamburger.

me too! as often as i can hop on my brother-in-laws bike :)

It is a legal issue not safety.

For example the US surgeon general wants to outlaw all tobacco. (really) At some point the law can and SHOULD only do so much.

We could outlaw bungee jumping, cars that go faster than 35mph. (cars entirely, since they cause more head injuries)

it just gets silly. What we really need is a revolution in helmet design to get away from the absurd styrofoam coolers.

Strange they want to let people ride motorcycles without helmets but ban smoking. I don't get it. Where are their brains? Isn't this a complete contradiction?

I agree about helmets, and insurance company policies should be all the incentive one needs to wear a helmet. I've seen a few accidents. But then, what sense does it make to ban smoking????? I haven't smoked in 30 years, but this just drives me nuts.
