Anything that introduces an element of luck advantages the less skillfull team and disadvantages the more skillfull.

It may appear that a bad playing field should affect both teams equally and fairly. However, as with so many "intuitively obvious" things, that isn't the case.

In my sport, for instance, bad officiating can give the 2nd through 6th or 7th best competitors a chance to win a competition, where with very good officiating they would have no chance.

People who do not play or have never played a sport at a very high level, I believe, have a tendency not to understamd what you have said so well.
