Playing a gay character rarely hurts someone's career. If I were a betting man he is doing it to try and get some respect for his acting ability. Like Leonardo DiCaprio its assumed they can't act because they are pretty faces. Going gay almost guarantees an Oscar nomination, look at this years nominees...

But many actors notably including Al Pacino and Tom Hanks off the top of my head have had great careers after playing gay characters.
