At first, Joey Porter pledged not to speak with reporters after Super Bowl XL Media Day.
Then, he softened his stance and promised to keep his outspoken mouth in check.
Wednesday, he took that plan and threw it to the ground like a defenseless quarterback.
The Steelers' loquacious linebacker couldn't contain himself yesterday when he learned Seattle Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens predicted Jerome Bettis' return to Detroit would culminate with a Super Bowl loss.
"I've been asleep all week, but now, I got woke up," Porter said yesterday. "I've got my first taste of blood, and now I'm thirsty for more. Until now, it was, 'Watch what I say. I can't say this. I can't say that. Don't do anything silly.'
"I'm ready now."
The Super Bowl had been controversy-free until Stevens livened it up with a quote that was published yesterday in Seattle newspapers.
"It's a heartwarming story and all that," Stevens said, referring to Bettis' homecoming and impending retirement, "but it will be a sad day when he leaves without that trophy."
Porter can appreciate some spirited trash-talking, but evidently, not from someone with Stevens' modest credentials.
A 6-foot-7 former first-round pick now playing in his fourth season, Stevens had a career-best 45 catches for 554 yards and five touchdowns this season. By comparison, Steelers rookie tight end Heath Miller posted comparable numbers, besting Stevens by one touchdown.
"I feel like (Stevens), out of anybody, should know his role," Porter said. "I mean, he hasn't done anything to make anybody fear him. Jerome is a walking Hall-of-Fame guy that everybody knows about. This guy (Stevens) was almost a first-round bust, who barely made some plays this year.
I'm going to make sure he doesn't have anything to do with the outcome of the game."

She's very attractive, of course.
TASTY!
Get with the program. If you're NOT a fan, why are you IN this thread?
You keep making my point for me.
You're one of the infamous deranged abusers of the Internet who make themselves feel tough and important through anonymus big talk and name calling.
In reality your ilk are too whacked to be able to keep from showing that you're really just an impotent, angry little wuss who considers any means justifiable for your little fantasies come true as opposed to actually having an honorable life.
Anyone who would enjoy seeing any athlete carried off the field with a career-ending injury if it means her team winning is a pathetic loser, and one that no athlete of integrity would want rooting for them.
Go ahead and try to rationalize your sickness as being a good "fan". Sane people know better.
Take another drug. You are ALL wrong..
No Steeler fan EVER wants to see an opponent player carted off the field with an injury!
GOT IT!?
Huh? Outside of Monday morning hangover and bragging rights for a year, what exactly is "at stake"? And unless you have some significant financial interest in a Steeler victory, it is only entertainment.
****
Thank you for saying that!
That poster needs to .................... no, never mind.
RIGHT ON!!!!
:-)
Seattle holds a special place in my heart, because it's where I received a bone marrow transplant in 1991.
Back then I made several trips to the Markets, and discovered a big brass pig, where musicians hung out and played for donations.
So when I went this time, I had it in mind to find the pig and get a picture of it.
Well, I found it, and as I pulled my camera from my backpack, three "stripper hot" girls walked up with a photographer, bodyguard and what must have been their agent or P.R.guy.
The three hotties then proceeded to mount the pig for an imprinter photo shoot!
Needless to say, I got a shot of the pig that was more than I had dreamed of! One of which is proudly displayed as my computer backhand.
Give me a second and I'll post the picture. Can't see but a small piece of the pig! ;^)
yeah, yeah...typical stereotype.
It would be sad if it WASNT so true. :)
Its funny becuase its true.
Just so you know though the loggers, fisherman, dockworkers, blue collar fans of the pacific NW are every bit the true fan a steelers fan is.
Can I borrow one for the weekend?
See post #112.
I think you're wrong. Kimo was VERY upset about taking Palmer out - it was very obvious that nobody felt good about that. I dont' get your logic.
If this is far too serious for you, then you dont' have enough to do. I hope the steelers win, but they get paid a heck of a lot of money for what they do.
Aside from being a totally unique sports broadcaster, Myron Cope was also a pretty damn good home spun philosopher. Many years ago some guy wound as tight as this Mighty Eighth character called his talk show after an especially tough Steeler loss. This poor saps life was in shambles because of a damn football game. Myron offered him some wise council that I paraphrase here.
"Listen fellow. In the great department store of life, sports is just the toy department. It's for fun. It's not life and death. It's not war and peace. It's to play with and enjoy. If you can't enjoy sports, win or lose, you shouldn't be following them."
Sniff. Does that mean I can't borrow one? :~((
