Some of those participants do know that they are off. Some have even found 5 seconds of fame from it.
It's like a (no) talent show.
Bring the Gong Show back to broadcast television, and you might be able to draw that same audience.

The tryouts are hilarious. The funniest thing is that some of those morons really think they can sing! Others are just trying to get on TV.
