As to the amount of lost work, it depends on how often you set your checkpoint. I set mine for 10 minutes.
I've been setting it to 30 mins. when my L/T will be running for a few hours, or more.
I reset it to every 5-10 mins before I turn it off.
Is this helping me to retain more of the work?
(Now I'm sounding like a geek. That's a good thing, right?)
I think you're worrying too much. Just set it and forget it. The impact is minimal. Losing up to 20 minutes a day is frankly meaningless.

Several others have replied that it's probably not worth the effort... I agree. If you want to be really sure you've saved that last bit of info, check the Log file; when it says that it's "Writing local files", your last checkpoint has been written. Then you can shut down and salvage the last few minutes of folding.
