Wait a second. Is it a burial cave from the Second Temple period? For it does not appear to be on the temple grounds, but in, or near, Beit Shemesh, i.e. in some other place.

Yep. Second Temple period, -- certainly not on the temple grounds, that would defile the temple.
The dead are 'unclean', so Jews always buried their dead outside the city.
