Some of my friends have called Carr a bust. I tell them I can't make that judgment because he's spent most of his career on his back.

Which Steelers from that era do you think deserved to get in?

The way I heard it, Dallas' owner Tex Schram annointed the Cowboys "America's Team" before one of the Super Bowls. NFL Films brass went to Art Rooney Sr. and asked him what he thought about Dallas' new nickname, Rooney replied 'We don't want to be America's team, we're Pittsburgh's team.' Bum Phillips in 1979 after the Houston Oilers defeated the Dallas Cowboys:
"They might be America's Team, but we're Texas's Team."
That had to sting a little. ;-)

OOps... that was a goof wasn't it? Yes, the Broncos QB. I kept thinking Elway lost that one too.

Out of their four Super Bowls the Purple People Eaters played their best against the Steelers. Unfortunately for them the Steel Curtain played even better that day.

Yeah, time on your hands is the Devil's Tool!
Actually, Church Lady, the Devil's Tool was a double bladed axe he used to chop...
Somebody get Cliff out of here. Put him on the next bus to Picksley!
To get back to the thread, what ya bringing to the Super Bowl cookout, Allegra?

I always liked the Steelers clashes with the Oilers back then, Bum Phillips was great, quite a character!

I've met Bum before. My great uncle and him are close friends. Really nice guy.

Some of my friends have called Carr a bust. I tell them I can't make that judgment because he's spent most of his career on his back. It's true; the poor guy has never had a line. I think he's actually pretty good.
They experimented and let him call most of the plays in one game late this past season. It resulted in one of our two measly wins.
The next week, he threw for 295 yards against Jacksonville.
I think he just needs a line.
I hope I'm right.

He's still the only QB to start Super Bowls for two different teams. If Landry had gone with Staubach over him in 1970 the 'Boys would have another Lombardi trophy.

To get back to the thread, what ya bringing to the Super Bowl cookout, Allegra? Ummm...hummus? Tabbouli? Falafel?

Houston was one win away from an all Texas Super Bowl in 1978.

I always liked the Steelers clashes with the Oilers back then, Bum Phillips was great, quite a character! Those were the days, weren't they? And yes, Bum is a Houston icon to this day and very much a part of the community.
I chatted with him once at a rodeo barbecue a few years back and he was very nice and down-to-earth.

I asked him what his favorite win was. He said the 1979 divisonal round against Fouts and the Chargers.

Bob Hayes - drug problems. That did it for him (yeah, I know about Michael Irvin, but today's climate is different apparently - sucks to be Hayes).

Ahhhhhh, memories....
