If sent grocery shopping, my hubby also gets a fraction of the amount of an item needed, unless it is canned ripe olives-and he buys a 6 months supply of those-and he doesn't know one cut of meat from another, either.
If we do build on one of those bigger lots, I'm going to do the same as Gabz and have a huge garden space tilled-there is a dearth of variety in the fresh vegetables for sale up here, so I see a need I can fill. I hadn't thought about the extra, added benefit of less yard to mow.
The only thing my husband is good for is junk food runs, and I don't eat much of that at all. He will buy cleaning stuff though, as a chemical engineer he loves that stuff. rme He buys cleaners I won't use. Cuts of meat are way beyond his ability to pick out. He knows nothing about getting a meal together. I was sick yesterday and his idea of fixing a meal is calling the local pizza place for a couple of subs.
