HAVING regular sex helps you become a better public speaker, a study claims.
But it has to be the real thing.
Full sex, with a partner of the opposite sex, works better than any other kind of "gratification", according to university experts.
Other forms were not as effective in calming the nerves and relieving stress but were still better than no nookie at all.
The University of Paisley asked 24 female and 22 male volunteers to keep a fortnight's diary of their sexual activities, detailing what they did, when and how often. After the two-week trial, volunteers undertook tasks including speaking in public and performing mental arithmetic.
University psychologist Stuart Brody monitored their stress levels by measuring their blood pressure, neuroticism and anxiety as they carried out the tasks.
He then compared the levels with the different types of sexual activity they had in the previous two weeks, he told the journal New Scientist.
Those who had full intercourse fared best of all.
Their blood pressure levels returned to normal the quickest and they were least stressed.
Volunteers whose diaries revealed a fortnight of other kinds of sexual gratification managed to reduce stress levels a little.
All were more successful in dealing with the stress of a public performance than those who had abstained from sexual activity, the study found.
Brody believes the reason why sex with a partner is best of all is because of a hormone called oxytocin which is released during intercourse and has a long-lasting calming effect.
Footballers are often banned from sex the night before a game because, if they were calm, the adrenalin would not pump.
But it could help those who have to speak in public, whether they be politicians, TV presenters or executives making a pitch.
Brody explained: "The effects of sex endure for at least a week."
And New Scientist added: "Got some public speaking to do? Here's a tip to keep stress at bay - have sex beforehand."
