NFL - Race an issue, but networking is still the key

At least it won't be a shutout.

But it is a blowout.

Herman Edwards' being "traded" from New York to Kansas City was the lone score for the cause. There were nine other NFL head coaching vacancies this offseason. Eight have been filled (the Oakland job is still open) with seven first-time coaches and one so-called "retread." Of the eight hires, none was a minority.

And so the NFL's diversity record remains six African-American coaches out of 32. A disappointing loss and an opportunity lost, for sure. But as can be the case with blowouts, minority coaches' going one-for-nine (and counting) isn't as bad as it looks.

Step back and you can see significant progress, like a dozen minorities receiving some 25 interviews among them. Edwards' going to the Chiefs represented at once both a significant step for minority head coaches and, ironically, the very reason the overall number did not, as expected, increase this offseason.

Pardon if I sound blunt...but what the heck?

How come sports commentators and pundits are the only ones commenting on apparent racial inequality? If you're hired, you're hired. No buts about it. Doesn't matter your skin color.

If there happens to be more white guys than black guys coaching, is the average NFL fan going to care?

Nah.

What are your thoughts?

Anytime ESPNN ventures outside of basic sports reporting, especially if they are musing about racial equality, I recommend switching the channel. You won't miss a thing.

What part of "being qualified" does ESPN not understand? If they keep this up, they're going to go the way of Sports Illustrated.

If the coaching staffs have to be racially balanced, why not all NFL positions??? Four of 32 is 12.5% and with a black population of about 13%, that is right in line. Screw the racist bums. Why not limit the starting RBs to 4 in the league, or CBs to 4, or the roster to 6-7 total which is in line with the 13% population? Then we can limit college scholarships to 13%. Screw these racist bums, lets give them total equality!!!!! Let them be equal and RIGHT NOW!!!!!!

Or at the very least make it a rule that for every position open, a head coach MUST consider a white guy and give him equal opportunity to earn that position before giving it to the black guy. That's the rules owners must face when hiring coaches. At least one black guy has to be interviewed for the position before anyone can be hired.
By the way, who are the new coaches and what teams signed them?

Up until this article, I was just thinking about how nice it was that we'd gone the entire post-season, and the college national championship without anybody worrying about race. For all the reasons for supporting USC or Texas, I didn't hear of anybody saying they were rooting for one or the other because Young is black and Lienart white. I had no idea what the races of the current NFL coaches being hired was, and didn't really care. These sports writers must have a pathetic life, sitting in their corners bean counting, instead of (1) enjoying the sport, and (2) rooting for people based on their character instead of their color. The only color I care about is the jersey color. (Hint: Burnt Orange=good, Burgandy=evil)

I'll be concerned when there are enough representative white guys playing in the NFL.

"If they [ESPN] keep this up, they're going to go the way of Sports Illustrated."

Couldn't agree more. I recently re-subscribed to SI after many years of dropping it. It's a rag. Every play is "spectacular" and every feat is "unfathomable." The pictures are still top-rate.

Not a fan of fair at all. Quotas are fair. Fairness is the enemy of justice. Just is getting what you earn. Fair is getting what you "may" not have earned and because of some other reason. My point is the blacks want to have it all their way. Something is seventy-Five percent black, that's OK because they earned that, but anything less than their magic desire is racist.

How about race being an issue in the NBA ?White guys are few and far in between.

On my Seahwaks, about 60%+ of the team is black or of color. This is a higher precentage than the USA.

We need an affirmative action program to make the team racially balanced.

Regardless of the fact the team might suck then.

Affirmative action is racist.

Hence, the paucity of Caucasian running backs, wide receivers and defensive backs, I suppose.
