Hey! My uncle used to use English-ized words to approximate German phrases:

I played for a Lutheran service this evening..........(subbing for a friend).

I was a nervous wreck the whole time.

The ratio of music to dialogue is quite different than in a Catholic liturgy...........the rhythm of the thing was totally different...............it's like, they sang at the drop of a hat!

Prelude........Gathering hymn.......a few words..........praise hymn........a reading...a song........a reading........3 sung acclamation in a row........etc. etc. etc.

TWO offertory songs (one a piano solo...good thing I brought extra music!)....THREE communion hymns.........then a couple more songs just for the heck of it.....a closing hymn..........and a piano postlude (again, glad I brought stuff.)

And they sing EVERY VERSE OF EVERY HYMN!!!!

It was a nice service though.........and the people were very kind, even when I botched something at the end (I got lost in the program and was trying to find my place when I noticed this deadly silence getting longer & longer & longer and everybody turning around to look at me and realized I was supposed to be playing something.)

The (young, female) minister handled it expertly by using the time to thank me for coming & playing today and having everybody give me a round of applause..........all the while I was frantically trying to figure out WHAT THE HECK I WAS SUPPOSED TO BE PLAYING.

I eventually found it and the service went on.

Well, ya see, all that singing took their minds off the fact that, until Martin Luther standardized written German, they all spoke something different, even across the backyard fence!! HA!!!

The European Commission have just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the EU rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5-year phase-in plan that would be known as "EuroEnglish":

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favor of the "k". This should klear up konfusion and keyboards kan have 1 less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with the "f". This will make words like "fotograf" 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of the silent "e"'s in the language is disgraceful, and they should go away.

By the 4th yar, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".
