Brokeback Mountain #1 movie at the box office
Variety ^ | Thurs., Jan. 19, 2006, 5:10pm PT | BEN FRITZ

Jumping off a big win at the kudofest Monday and helped by an otherwise weak field, "Brokeback Mountain" garnered the impressive achievement of a solid No. 1 win at the box office Tuesday and Wednesday despite playing just 682 theaters. With about $740,000 both days, Focus' cowboy love story beat "Glory Road," which was on 2,222 playdates, by approximately $50,000 Tuesday and $100,000 Wednesday.

That puts "Brokeback" in a very strong position as it expands this weekend to 1,194 playdates -- a significant boost from the 800-900 Focus was planning before the Globes victories.

...

Focus has been regularly expanding "Brokeback" by 100-200 playdates per week for the past few weeks, but decided to take advantage of excitement among exhibs and the public after the Globes.

"We have the opportunity now with these exhibitors to play at least through the Academy Award nominations," said Focus distrib toppertopper Jack Foley.

If, as expected, "Brokeback" garners a slew of Oscar noms on Jan. 31, it could go significantly wider then.

Pic will push into remaining small cities, as well as further into the suburbs, this weekend.

"Brokeback" also has a big weekend overseas, where it's opening in Spain, Italy, France, Norway and Taiwan. It's cumed $6.1 million foreign so far, mostly via two strong weeks in the U.K., where it's playing on 275 screens.

Pic bowed Wednesday in France with 155 prints, becoming the No. 2 pic in the country and the highest-ranked in Paris with 15,397 admissions. In all of France, it finished with 37,331 admissions, missing the No. 1 spot by about 1,000.

"Even if this movie made only $20.00 they'd call it a success."

My guess is that every homosexual in the world with a DVD player will own a copy.

it is kind of comical for me. I don't have tv and don't even listen to the radio any more. The ONLY place I have ever seen the title of this movie or its discussion is here on FR.

Oh, and nothing whatsoever compels me to see this movie.

didnt bring it on and legally blonde bring in more money?

Another good comparison would be My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Its production costs were only 1/3 of BM ($5 million vs BM's $15 million), and yet it has a worldwide gross of almost $369 million. By those standards, BM will break into the black, but it certainly isn't a blockbuster.

"Independent films are those black & white movies about gay cowboys eating pudding." - Cartman from South Park

I've been wondering if the two-day bump in box office receipts for Bareback Mountin' is due to the Golden Globe awards the film received or the new theater promotion where they serve pudding at each showing. It is certainly one or the other.

Ennis: Say Jack, do ya have any pudding left?

Jack: I ate all mine up, silly.

Ennis: Well now what do we do?

Jack: Why don't we explore our sexuality?

Ennis: Oh good idea. Let's....

Moviegoer: Aww dude I shouldn't be seeing this!

Yes, this was taken from the South Park episode that featured commentary about all independent films being about gay cowboys eating pudding. Yes, I changed the names to match the names of the gay sheepherders in Bareback Mountin'. No, I don't watch South Park and I have not seen this episode. And, no, there were no sheep harmed in the writing of this post.

It will get oscar buzz and with some Euro and Japanese help, it will probably hit about $90-100 mill.

This is very bad news. I wasn't expecting anything over $25 million. But what other movie opens with virtually no box office and then goes on to $100 million two months later? After a week or two box office usually trails off.

The MSM did their job, that's for sure.

This only means it's doing well in the 12 theatres it's playing. They release it only in high density population centers with a large homosexual community nearby and then talk about how every chair in the theatre is full. (I almost said "every seat is full")

It's just a silly abuse of statistics.

I thought this movie began with a limited distribution; so am wondering how it is now number one at the box office.

Is there some kind of Liberalese being spoken here?

"So what."

My sentiments exactly. They are really stretching it reporting it as number one at the box office on Tuesday and Wednesday, (like who the heck goes to the movies on Tuesdays and Wednesday, (well besides funny boys apparently)). Next thing we will hear is it is number one at the box office as measured from 1:30 AM to 2:15 AM on Thursday morning.

The real measure of a good movie is this--Narnia--$264,202,859 vs. Brokeback--$32,074,517.

"The movie is not even showing around here !"

I don't see it playing in Dallas suburbs, either.

Well is started in a very limited release, understandable. It got a lot of publicity, Letterman, Leno, (look at the number of threads here). Then the Golden Globe nominations. Then the ceremony. Now the oscar nominations coming along. Then the ceremony, then the continued showings after that. It adds up.

I'm guessing it will make a few bucks in Europe and Japan.

Box Office Mojo shows $14 in production costs. Most of the publicity I mentioned is free. So it's easy to be in the black, pun intended.
