Jumping off a big win at the kudofest Monday and helped by an otherwise weak field, "Brokeback Mountain" garnered the impressive achievement of a solid No. 1 win at the box office Tuesday and Wednesday despite playing just 682 theaters. With about $740,000 both days, Focus' cowboy love story beat "Glory Road," which was on 2,222 playdates, by approximately $50,000 Tuesday and $100,000 Wednesday.
That puts "Brokeback" in a very strong position as it expands this weekend to 1,194 playdates -- a significant boost from the 800-900 Focus was planning before the Globes victories.
...
Focus has been regularly expanding "Brokeback" by 100-200 playdates per week for the past few weeks, but decided to take advantage of excitement among exhibs and the public after the Globes.
"We have the opportunity now with these exhibitors to play at least through the Academy Award nominations," said Focus distrib toppertopper Jack Foley.
If, as expected, "Brokeback" garners a slew of Oscar noms on Jan. 31, it could go significantly wider then.
Pic will push into remaining small cities, as well as further into the suburbs, this weekend.
"Brokeback" also has a big weekend overseas, where it's opening in Spain, Italy, France, Norway and Taiwan. It's cumed $6.1 million foreign so far, mostly via two strong weeks in the U.K., where it's playing on 275 screens.
Pic bowed Wednesday in France with 155 prints, becoming the No. 2 pic in the country and the highest-ranked in Paris with 15,397 admissions. In all of France, it finished with 37,331 admissions, missing the No. 1 spot by about 1,000.

It won for two days. Let's see how it does this weekend when the missionary movie comes out.....
Even in the big city of Chicago it is showing only in liberal/gay hotspots. It is shown on about 20-25% of the screens new movies are typically shown on.
Liberals flocked to see Michael Moore's homemovie, Fahrenheit 9-11 and made it a minor success. There are enough liberal sickos, homos, lesbians, degenerates and bi-sexuals in America to make Brokeback a minor success too. BFD.
The difference is subtle and essentially moot - it just boils down to whether they need to pack a stepstool or not.
That's right! People look around and say, "so where's this supposedly earth shattering film?" because they don't see it and everyone they read and hear can't stand the very idea of the film and isn't seeing and won't be seeing it, and...
THIS VERY ARTICLE IS THE PRODUCT OF STUDIO HYPE. Universal is pumping their fetid hotness into their public relations process to get this "news" out all over the world such that people MIGHT believe it but, so what if they don't!
This article and all the hype about it is simply a process of Universal going "wonky" as to their need to earn the big DOLLAHS, so they literally just plaster the world with references to, "quotes" about, articles about, this wretched, hideous "film."
They should be held accountable for starters for their false advertising, given that their print and filmed ads for the title present "a love story" and the thing itself is actually pornography, complete with specific filmed homosexual acts.
It's "a love story" about "adultery, pornography, brutality, lying, lies and deceit!" Which explains why Universal just had to mislead the public to get anyone other than homosexuals in whatever theatres are showing this in places like San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and the inevitable saturation in Hollywood.
No kidding, the movie has barely taken in enough money to cover the actor's salaries yet it's being touted as if it was more successful than Star Wars.
Yes, because adultery, betrayal, pornography, deceit, lying and lies and homosexual sex is what the MSM is ALL ABOUT! Finally, a film they can get behind!
Oh, and not to overlook pretty scenery and great cinematogrpahy! The film makes sure that everything's well decorated!
See my comments #67.
EXACTLY!!!!
Yikes, I'm sorry I asked...
"...a film about suicide bombers exploding bombs form their butt..."
Perhaps we shouldn't give them any more "creative ideas," ha. 'Cause next year...I think I see a theme emerging here by a commisserating group of interests.
I am sure it will get here eventually..
I am intrested in seeing how this film does overall in states like Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Alabama, Texas, South Carolina, Wyoming, Idaho.. LOL
No normal person wants to see two men having sex in a tent.
"They say don't go....on Brokeback Mountain....if you're a-lookin'....for a wife...."
Not one damn Brokeback Dime!
To be truthful...look over movies that generally were "super" in January...this is one of the worst months out of the year to go over to a theater. You could bring out Ernest Goes to Camp in January and it would likely soar because there isn't any major competition.
