Good morning, fellow FReeper baseball FANatics...It's been a while since we've all caught up..( and there were a few things going on...college bowl games, the NFL payoffs, and a SCOTUS nominee hearting..Getting close to "pitchers and catchers" reporting...( February 16th) So I thought I'd run a thread to get your take on how your particular team's done in the off season, and also to find out what you think of the upcoming World BaseBall Classic..

I'd have to say go with Roberts. His drop-off in the second half was troubling, but even so .... Castillo will give you the same guaranteed result every year -- but he'll never have the upside Roberts showed in 2005.

Check it out:

Roberts
2003 - .703 OPS
2004 - .720 OPS
2005 - .902 OPS (1.007 first half, .770 second half)

vs.

Castillo
2003 - .778 OPS
2004 - .721 OPS
2005 - .765 OPS

Even when Roberts isn't hitting hrs, he hits tons of doubles, which is why his 'poor' second half still matches up with Castillo's season total. Roberts hit 23 doubles in the second half, Castillo 12 the whole year. Plus he's two years younger and more in his prime.

I don't know about worst offseason in baseball, but the Braves took a few on the chin. They lost Rafael Furcal even after Chipper took a pay cut to free up some salary room, they lost Old Man Franco (who will become the oldest player to hit a home run as a Met), and ace pitching coach Leo Mazzone. The last loss will hurt them the most. Ah well, all good things must end.

Oh, and Mike Schmidt rocks. He played great defense and was the top home run hitter of his time (as much as it pains this Dale Murphy fan to admit it). He even led the Phillies to their only World Series win (with a little help from some guy name Rose).

By your requirements, Ozzie Smith/Omar Vizquel and Derek Jeter would have been a 3rd basemen instead of the best SS ever

I don't know how you can arrive at such a conclusion. Because, certainly, when thinking of extraordinary range and quickness, The Wizard immediately comes to mind. But, not when the subject is arms. No one in their right mind would put Ozzie at 3rd base. Not because he's too good to 'waste' at 3B, but because his tools were perfect for SS.

WHY would you put a 3rd baseman at Short? Because he's SLOW? LOL right. You need mobility to be a shortstop. Just ask Derek Jeter.

Of course you need mobility. But, Ripken himself is quoted as saying in 1990, "I'm not blessed with the kind of range a lot of shortstops have."1

Furthermore, mobility is not quickness. It seems you're forgetting that, compared to SS, 3B is closer to the batter's box. That's why it's called "the hot corner". Combine that with the fact that 3B is further from 1B, and maybe you'll begin to understand why extraordinary quickness and arm are the minimum requirements for true greatness at 3B.

Cal was too good at 3rd to be left there when you have a gaping hole at shortstop to be filled. He was already a gold glove 3rd basement before he moved on to become a gold glove Shortstop.

You might want to check again. Cal Ripken, Jr. never won a Gold Glove at 3B. Both of his ('91, '92) were at SS.

If you continue to insist third basemen play there because they're not good enough to play SS, you might want to consider that's a generalization that tends to fade away sometime between the ages of 10 and 15.

At any rate, enough already. I've said my piece. Spring training can never come soon enough.

I just saw this. Good deal for the Sox really. They lose Damon and replace him with a guy with similar .OPS numbers last year, he's going to be about $8 million a year cheaper than Damon over the next four years and is only going to improve while Damon is likely to decline, no offense intended, JD.

Plus, they will sign Gonzalez at SS and they will have completed the team.

The only thing left is to figure out what Manny wants to do.

You know, you will likely find the answer to the question or what women really want before you figure out Manny...

Saw him play for Tribe while visiting a friend in Ohio. Real first name Covelli, IIRC.

Consider this:

Mueller, Millar, Olerud, rEntEria, Damon, Mirabelli, Graffanino, Bradford, Myers, Manteii, Miller, Harville are all gone

Beckett, Lowell, Gonzalez, Loretta, Crisp, JT Snow, Seanez and Tavarez are here with Youk getting a regular shot to play. You have Pedroia, Hanson and Delcarmen in the minors ready to make a contribution this year.

Suddenly things don't look so bad, do they? Better pen, Beckett is better than AJ Burnett, Crisp is likely to be an upgrade over Damon in the field and you don't lose anything at the plate with him. Gonzalez is better defensively than rEntEria and Lowell and Snow are Gold Glovers.

Assuming this goes through, I'm waiting to see who the prospects are in the trade to see whether or not we're getting hosed.

According to the Herald, the Indians are going to get Marte and Mota from us for their .810 OPS left fielder who can play center, then flip Mota to the Phillies for their .814 OPS center fielder who can play left.

Makes me wonder why we can't just trade Mota to the Phillies directly and keep Marte, but what do I know .....

Crisp for Marte...? I'm not so sure about this. Isn't Marte supposed to be the top prospect in MLB?

Yes but Crisp can play at the major league level and he can handle center field which is a really expensive position to stick nowadays.

Crisp is cheap for sure, but I hope this doesn't turn turn in to another Shilling-Finley-Harnish for Glenn Davis sort of trade(WORST TRADE IN MLB HISTORY!).
