I have to disagree. I think the Duke was a great actor. You have to look at his early films. Stagecoach for instance. When an actor becomes an icon it's hard to separate the actor from the mythology, and it becomes difficult to judge their talent. They come to seem as parodies of themselves.

I guess it's subjective. Don't get me wrong, I loved his movies, but I would cringe watching his absurd attempts at reacting to the other actors in a scene. It always looked the same. The only exception was True Grit, where he played a character that was not John Wayne.

Anyone who thinks he couldn't act needs to watch High & The Mighty & Red River again. Red River was the one he should have won the oscar for. True Grit was a piece of crap by comparison-as you said, by that time, he was parodying himself. They gave him an award for that because he'd been around so long-hollywood politics.
