Are there any really easy and not horribly toxic ways to keep bugs away from plants? That was another problem I had with my tomatoes that one year. There was *one* that actually transplanted OK, but bugs got to it.

Yes, but you really need more space than a patio can offer. Crop rotation, companion planting, pepper/garlic waxes, neem, hand-picking, etc are all pretty harmless but take a lot of time.

I saw a lot of improvement last year with the companion planting - except for the squash bugs that went after my zuchs. The idea is to attract good predator bugs to eat the baddies while confusing the baddies over where their food source is.
