IMO, Turning every song into alt/hardrock is not pleasing. That song wasn't meant for that.

Your opinion, of course, but I assume you don't like any alternative rock music. Personally, I love alt-rock and loved that version of that classic song. Very fresh take. Art is a matter of personal preference and not an objective standard.

I think IF they can, sure make the song your own, but keep the song in the style it was meant to be.

Question, how exactly can you make it your own without changing the style? Just some different vocals that are karaoke rip-offs of the original? What talent does that show?

I think these contestants need to be able to sing different styles. THEN when they become big stars, they can focus on one style.

Why? Name one artist who made it big after first putting out songs of all different styles and genres? I am far more impressed by the artistry and talent it takes to turn an original work into something completely different than merely singing the virtually unchanged original. Again, matter of personal preference.
