San Francisco -- A shooting suspect being pursued in a high-speed chase this morning dragged a police officer for a block after the officer tried to pull him out of his car, Sgt. Neville Gittens said today.
The officer has been hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries to the head and legs, Gittens said.
Two 27-year-old men are also in hospital, both with life-threatening injuries, following a shooting that led to the chase.
One man was shot once and another was shot three times, Gittens said.
The high-speed pursuit began when just before midnight police received a report of a shooting in front of a business at 2230 Mission Street.
Responding officers saw a Honda fleeing the scene and chased it to the area of Alameda and Utah streets before losing it, Gittens said.
Another police car then picked up the pursuit, according to Gittens.
As the suspect's car sped along 4th Street, it spun out of control and struck another vehicle near Bryant Street. A nearby officer got out of his patrol car and tried "to get the suspect out of the vehicle," Gittens said.
But the suspect drove away and the officer was unable to disentangle himself from the moving car. He was dragged "about a block" along 4th Street.
The suspect drove his car into a concrete barrier on the roadway in an attempt to knock him from the vehicle, Gittens said. The officer was able to jump off the car

Lucky cop.
Thank God for that gun ban they passed.
We had a case like that in Pittsburgh several years ago in which the cop was dragged for far more than a few blocks. It was only after he shot the driver and the passenger (while being dragged) that he was able to stop the car--ended up very badly injured but lived. The next day, you saw the perps' mothers on TV crying that he shouldn't have killed "their babies."
Sounds like attempted murder of a police officer to me.
Book him, Dano!
My thought also. I know this story can't be true because SF has a gun ban. /sarc
But seriously, to walk away from being dragged along the street on a high speed chase is remarkable.
I hate it when college kids (journalists) attempt to sound smart by pretending to be British.
