I always thought if you used the hand tools and lots of patience and care, your item would look better and last longer...not to mention being cared for...

Actually, I recommend being knowledgeable enough about the way things used to be done so that you can duplicate the look, and in an emergency, function without the power tools.
Consider New Orleans, for example.
