Word For The Day, Thursday, January 12, 2006 - dubiety
dictionaries ad nauseum | January 12, 2006 | secret garden

Posted on 01/12/2006 5:00:50 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

dubiety \doo-BY-uh-tee; dyoo-\, noun
1. The condition or quality of being doubtful or skeptical.
2. A matter of doubt.

Example sentences:
Kennedy and O'Connor may think that Title 3 has been violated, but O'Connor and the chief justice are not convinced that the Supreme Court was meant to litigate challenges under that federal statute, and their dubiety here is shared by Justices Scalia and Souter.
--Hadley Arkes, "A Morning at the Court," National Review, December 2, 2000

I want every inconsistency, every dubiety, every ambiguity left in.
--David Maclean, quoted in David Hencke, "Tories plot hunt bill dirty tricks," The Guardian, January 17, 2001

Etymology: Dubiety is from Late Latin dubietas, from Latin dubius, "doubtful, uncertain."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

well you should know that even putting in the p with brackets to set off the paragraph disabled the link, so they truly mean NO HTML in any part of the post to get it to hotlink.

Partially due to that bill, WalMart has put on a hold a new distribution center in this area. 1,000 jobs is a lot of jobs for an area such as this.

You don't know how sick and bloody tired of am of seeing, hearing and reading about Biden.

Senator Coburn, please pick up the white phone I would much rather see that chick sitting next to Mrs. Alito, (Over Sams left shoulder) that looks like Trinity slip into Matrix Mode and bounce Fat Ted around the room..

This one golfer was always using hand-me-downs and ratty equipment, even though he was obviously well-to-do and could afford otherwise.

He was so "thrifty" that at each hole, he would take his initial stroke off the ground, and then grouse about the less-than-ideal results. Upon hearing his complaints that he didn't know what would help, his fellow players were heard to say-

"Dubiety..."

Send in the clowns.....Today's Senate hearing has begun.

Of Teddy's sobriety
one must maintain dubiety.

Chuckie the Schmuck
continues to suck.

Catholic Biden
continues his lyin'.

And the day isn't hardly started yet........I wonder if Mrs. Alito is Catholic.........if she is I would love to see her holding her rosary beads for protection today. he, he.......would that ever set off Biden........

Now that would be cool.

I mentioned Coburn because he mentioned Trubin's prior pro-life stance. Turnbin was steamed.

I swear, that guy is the best thing to happen to the Senate in years.
