NBCs new sitcom Book of Daniel aired Friday night and the reviews indicate it was even worse than originally thought. It goes way beyond just being offensive and actually makes fun of Christians and Jesus. The American Family Associating summed up the reviews they received with this e-mail from a viewer.
I watched the Book of Daniel show on NBC tonight just so I could see if it was as bad as you said. Mr. Wildmon you have it wrong - it was worse than you described. The so called pastor takes drugs, smokes, drinks, takes the Lords name in vain. He supports homosexuality and drug use. He broke the law by giving out prescription drugs to a Bishop. Two Bishops were committing adultery. They mis-quoted the Bible. The program portrayed our Savior in a joking way. There was a corrupt Catholic priest. The maid smokes pot. The Bishop drinks, the pastors wife is a drunk and her sister is a lesbian and the son is a homosexual. One son sleeps around. I found this program very offensive to my Christian beliefs. They were poking fun at our Savior.
Can you imagine the reaction wed see if NBC aired a similar program making fun of Mohamed and a Muslim Imam? Muslims would probably riot, NBC would receive death threats, and the left would demand that it be taken off the air. Of course, Christians dont threaten people with death for criticizing our faith, but it wouldnt hurt to express some outrage. AFA makes this suggestion.
Since the tone and content of the show is now known, call your NBC affiliate and ask them not to carry any more episodes of the program. Very important: Ask your local advertisers to pull their adverting from your NBC affiliate if they continue to air the program.
I could tell this from just the commercial I saw. If it wasn't making fun of Christians, these same critics would be laughing it off the air.
Even knowing what we know of the loose morals and religion-bashing for headlines that Hollywood is capable of doing, it is unreal to me that this show ever made it on the air.
This show I believe will be off the air in a few weeks it's a boring piece of trash.
where are the ratings?
Throw in a bunny bubbleboy Senator from Mass. and you've got a show.
Since there's no Book of Daniel Live Thread, you know it's in trouble.
yeah- I caught a couple of minutes- looks like a neat idea for a show done VERY poorly.
Picture this done the right way- like 'Touched by an Angel' - I bet it would be good.
In my opinion, the show is blasphemous. I heard the station in my town won't play it, I just hope and pray that it's quickly pulled off the air everywhere.
I agree, it won't last!
I somehow doubt it'll last, either. Esp. if people get their local stations to pull the plug.
My MIL wanted to watch this show. And I spoke up that there was no way; that it's got to be anti-Christian, makes fun of Christ, and besides, is simply absurd. I mean, come on - who of ANY type of person/vocation has that many abnormalities/problems swirling around them? It sounds from here even worse than I thought. But she simply defended it w/the old "regular people have lots of problems", "pastors aren't perfect" and all that equivocating junk! Unbelievable.
From what I've heard, they weren't too good. J. Max Robins
of Broadcasting and Cable (an industry publication) did his weekly appearance on the Howie Carr show and said that NBC
put the show on Friday nights, traditionally a low-viewership night, and from what he heard the ratings weren't all that hot.
A commentary on the show from BCBeat.com--a blog that's
part of BroadcastingAndCable:

"This Book's No Page Turner"--BY JOHN EGGERTON
>>Then there is the Catholic priest who is made out to be a "Goodfella" type with mob connections.
>>Last week I told those blasting the show not to judge it sight-unseen. Now, judging by the book not the cover, I am in no hurry for a sequel either.
>>A problem for fundamentalist Christians, of which there are millions, is a very California Jesus who refuses to pass judgment. Jesus is certainly supposed to be a stand-up guy, but this Jesus is more like a stand-up comedian whose tolerance borders on tacit approval of virtually any human activity as simply youthful or adultful or elderlyful indescretion. His message--lighten up. California, yes. Jesus. I'm not so sure.
well..no doubt it'll be a big hit on BRAVO soon...between reruns of the West Wing..
Also, for those wondering what ratings it got, I don't know if there's a place online that posts the "overnights". I know
USA Today used to, and maybe still does, post the prime
time ratings, day by day and show by show, once a week
(Wed. I think) but I don't know if they do that anymore.
(Yahoo does list the Top 20:
http://tv.yahoo.com/nielsen/
but I don't know if they list all the ratings.)
