Having difficulty with my PC. My machine has been acting up a bit lately. I use Firefox as my browser (no noticable problems when I use IE). Pages are slow to closeout and/or parially remain on the screen as I transition from one page/function to another.
The biggest distraction is that it woon't shutdown or restart properly. I have to shut the powersource off to get it to turnoff.
I still have access to the task manager function, so I'm confused as to whether or not its a bug. I run Norton/Symantec Protection Center. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
While we are on the subject, is anyone a good R programmer with experience in statistical work?
What Windows System are you running 98, M.E. XP etc? And this may sound stupid but have you done a defrag and scan disk on the hard drive? Also have you added any new programs or equipment lately?
By "It", do you mean the PC or Firefox?
If PC, what OS are you running, what hardware comprises the PC...CPU, memory etc?
It being the PC. I'm running XP.
Well...
Start by DUMPING ALL THE comcast crap.
If you want to play games then get a PlayStation or whatever, but DON'T play them on your computer.
Then go to Holymoly's home page here on FR and download and install and update them all before running them: SpyBotS&D,ZoneAlarm,AdWare,AVG Antivirus,Leaktest,WinPatrol,ShieldsUp and Google for Hijackthis also.
Be careful with the Highjackthis as you can remove things that you should not.
comcast=ted turner=aohell=A bunch of stuff you DO NOT want on your machine.
After all that go into the browser and set it to ASK for a Cookie to be set before anything else.
Turned out that my Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) was out of synch and needed reset.
I'd suggest looking in your system logs for obvious errors and start from there.
One question you need to ask is: "What changed?"
Does that need to be done with Mozzilla 1.7?
P.S. on the ZoneAlarm just download the BASIC free version NOT the SecuritySuite (it has problems)
If your RAM is close to the edge and too many programs are going slow downs and freeze ups will happen. XP does require a lot of RAM 256 SDRAM will barely keep you functional with just IE & Outlook Express. If I was doing anything more I'd have at least 512 MB with XP.
You also might want to go into your start up configuration, click selective start up mode, and shut down unneeded systems. www.pcpitstop.com is a good site to check that part out on. Do the systems test in the middle of the page scrolling down to the bottom. They do give some decent tips on what you need and don't need and how to tweak the computer. A word of advice I wouldn't use their links to automatic fix programs. That's how they make their money :>}
One good thing to do is look over the startup tab of the MSCONFIG window. Run the comand msconfig from your run box and see what you have starting up when the system starts.
I'd be willing to bet you have a number of items that run at startup that you either don't need or never wanted in the first place.
Injudicious web browsing and installing programs will add all sorts of things to this list and every one of them uses up system resources until one day...you get to where you are now.
You can go to this link at Answers That Work.com and search alphabetically for items in your startup task list and you'll find explanations for what they are and if you need them.
That's a good place to start. Spyware scans and Virus scans are a good next step but you have to get some resources back in order to run those programs, otherwise...well, you're there already with Spybot locked up on you.
Thanks for the Spybot reminder. I have to do a reinstall it looks like. Mine stopped taking updates for some unknown reason. Un-install and reinstall sounds easier than pulling my hair out.
That's why I use the Startup Tasklist page at Answers That Work.com. I have yet to find a program or listing that is NOT there to tell me what the heck I'm looking at.
I can't believe it. I couldn't get Spybot to update. Somewhere in the past couple of months I musta accidently changed the update server to Europe instead of Securityworks.net. I kept getting !!!Bad Sum Check ! every update. What was worse I uninstalled it and it still did it. I've used it for a couple of years and never had that problem. Oh well what else did I have to do for an hour anyway LOL.
