Women waste billions on clothes never worn

LONDON, JANUARY 7: British women have spent more than 7 billion pounds buying clothes, shoes and accessories they will never wear, according to a survey on Friday.

Women have 14 items of clothing, on average, lurking in the back of their wardrobes that they have not worn in the last year, the survey by home insurer Churchill found.

Each unwanted item cost an average 21.82 pounds, which meant Britain's 24 million women spent 7.3 billion pounds last year on clothes they did not wear, the insurer said.

Nearly two-thirds of women (62 percent) said that they bought their fashion follies in the sales, the same proportion as bought clothes a size too small in the hopes of dieting to fit their latest finds.

Churchill said women were spending an average 305 pounds a year on clothes they would never wear, or 12,810 pounds in a working lifetime.

"Many householders are guilty of buying new clothes in the sales which will never get worn," said Martin Scott, head of Churchill Home Insurance.

What is the deal with women and shoes, anyway? I've never understood why they need so many.

My wife, never one to be frivolous with money or a slave to the latest fashion, only has maybe 8 or 10 pair.

I myself have seven pairs. One pair all-purpose black dress/casuals for weddings and funerals; three pair of athletic-type lightweight hikers for everyday/casual/yard work wear (one is new, one is in so-so condition and one is old and ratty); one pair of high-quality steel-toed work boots (Red Wings) that I wear everyday to work and maintain meticulously; one pair of insulated camouflage hunting boots (also high-quality and also Red Wings) and one pair of heavy insulated winter pac-boots which I haven't worn in years and I'm not sure I even know where they are at the moment.

I have a solution for this. Buy an old house with really tiny closets. I can fit all 4 seasons of clothes into one small closet. No, it's not a walk-in closet. Very small!

I'm also a stay-at-home mom so I don't need the professional clothes anymore.

Shoes? Who wears shoes?

Exactly. Who wears shoes?

Years ago I needed a dress for a rather formal party, so Mr. Lu and I hit the mall. We went into the first store, I walked over to a rack, chose a dress, tried it on and told him I was ready to go.

He still marvels that I buy rather than shop.

I had a conversation with a lady friend (a waitress) about shoes. She claimed she had a wide variety of shoes to look good for the male customers. It would help the tips. I asked her how many men actually looked at her feet, and how many would know the shoes didn’t go with the outfit. She thought all of them did. I challenged her to wear comfortable sneakers instead of the torture devices known as stylish women’s shoes.
She did – and not one man noticed or commented. I doubt if one man even noticed (note – a very straight bar). Women did notice, and she admitted finally that she wore the stylish torture devices on her feet to impress the other women. They can be so catty at times.

I did some work in a woman's house whom was using a spare bedroom for her closet.

There was a small botique's worth of unopened hosiery, panties, bras, slips, belts, purses, etc. all in various store bags piled high.

Somewhere I have (had?)a pair of insulated Wolverines I bought when I lived a year way up North. I have no idea where they are – so I didn’t count them. They may even have walked off by now.
