The thing about these folks is that even when they're lying they need to inflate the importance of their own roles in the events they're describing.

That guy wasn't content to stick to a somewhat plausible story about serving in the Army during the Vietnam War, but had to create a fantasy where he was at the right hand of Lt. Calley himself, ordering the destruction of villages and commission of atrocities left and right.

Their delusions of grandeur would be amusing, were they not so sad.
