Unfortunately, that's not just the case at "big time" athletic schools, like USC...
I went to a college that was NCAA Division III, and one of my roommates was on the lacrosse team. He had the same attitude, and he was sure that if he got in trouble, "the coach would get me out of it!"
I guess he was treated special all his life because he was an athlete, and just felt that was how it was supposed to be: That he didn't have to follow the rules.

I plaed at USC from 1974 to 1976, then transferred. It was made clear to us that if we screwed up it would lead to a suspension, and if we really screwed up (a la Vick) we'd be off the team, and coach McKay didn't care how good we were. Robinson was the same way.
