WTFIIWSJ?
We'll go for a nosh next time you're in town.
Good service, bigass servings.
Look at this stupid criteria: Among them: the amount of public park space, access to health care, air quality, the relatively small number of fast-food restaurants and the leadership of Mayor Martin O'Malley.
Anything about exercise? Behavior? Stats on disease? Mortality rate? Anything that actually relates to fitness? Anything?
I would like to invite the reps from Mens Fitness to a Orioles or Ravens game and tell me how fit they are.
Furthermore, Baltimore is a dump. Not in the league of Detroit, but its a dump. It is NOT undergoing urban renewal as the article states. There is so much empty space downtown its sad, and if if you tried to open a business there, if the crack dealers and high taxes don't get you, then some liberal tort lawyer will finish you off.
That being said, I love the fried food there. And there are some neat Harbor Town draws, besides Larry Flynt's Hustler Club.
This reminds of all those education rankings done by teachers unions that rank areas by everything BUT grades, graduation rates, and any other measure of real success.
I would point to Baltimore's high levels of AIDS and drug addiction--hardly a sign of "fitness."
"...a typical Baltimore lunch: fried red snapper on thick white bread, with a side of french fries and a beer."
Nope, have never seen this either.
Hey, both of those will keep ya thin!
"The city's skyline is dotted with neon signs advertising Domino sugar, Utz potato chips and National Bohemian beer."
One can see the Domino sign but National has not been made in Baltimore for over 20 years.
Bullsh** to you son.
"...besides Larry Flynt's Hustler Club."
If this is what you think makes a good city, well, that explains a lot.
"Furthermore, Baltimore is a dump. Not in the league of Detroit, but its a dump. It is NOT undergoing urban renewal as the article states."
There is a great deal of urban renewal going on. Next time in Baltimore, drive from the Inner Harbor to Johns Hopkins Hospital. See what has become of the old Flag House area and the construction around Hopkins.
For the record, I don't really care for the "fittest" award or whatever. Found the article somewhat insulting. Now the comments of posters, well, they speak for themselves.
Don't forget Frostie Rootbeer, which is being made again in Texas to the original formula!
"We don't eat well at all," said Tremonteria Morgan, a vegetarian. "We eat a lot of fried foods fried chicken and soul food."
Doesn't sound like a very good vegetarian.
(People I know eat very little FRIED chicken and NO soul food.)
I liked the original National Boh and National Premium was excellent. The current stuff (G. Heilman I think) sucks.
Seagrams had a plant there too.
I can't say I'm terribly fond of Bal-mer, but being 5th generation Talbot Co. it's probably genetic. :)
Bawlmore also has America's seond highest murder rate and its mayor wants to be governor so much that a guy got a job with him after spreading rumors about the mayor's infidelity. What a scummy jerk.
Seagrams was just south of Baltimore in Arbutus, heading towards Elkridge. I am not a huge fan of the city myself but I found the article and some of the posts insulting. Long week getting to me I guess.:-)
Well, crack open a Gablinger's Extra Light and chill. :)
