In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

perquisite \PUR-kwuh-zit\, noun
1. A profit or benefit in addition to a salary or wages.
2. Broadly: The benefits of a position or office.
3. A gratuity or tip for services performed.
4. Anything to which someone has or claims the sole right.

Example sentence:
In a tight market for skilled labor... corporations are increasingly buying homes for hot new hires -- a perquisite once reserved for top executives.
--Jennie James, "For Many Europeans, There's No Place Like Home," Time, May 8, 2000

Etymology: Perquisite derives from Medieval Latin perquisitum, from the past participle of Latin perquirere, "to search for eagerly," from per-, "through, thoroughly" + quaerere, "to seek." In Middle English it meant "property acquired by means other than inheritance." By 1565 it had acquired the sense "fringe benefit"; by 1721 it had also come to signify "a tip or gratuity."
Synonyms: benefit, fringe benefit, gravy, perk, reward.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I'll take a dozen of each, and a bottle of oxygen, to go, por favor.

they know far more about satanism than Texans, and probably find the former preferable, as well.

There are some intriguing perquisites with being a politician in Delaware.........but the best is you can go through life as a sleaze bag knowing that you will still be re-elected.

Carper to keep funds from lobbyist's client

Carper insisted that donations from the tribes -- modest compared with some of his colleagues' -- were not the same as a direct contribution from Abramoff. "The senator has no relation with Jack Abramoff, has never met with Mr. Abramoff and neither have any of Senator Carper's staff," spokeswoman Bonnie Wu said. "The donations came from Native American groups that, like many other organizations, donate money to lawmakers and candidates and have a legitimate interest before Congress."

Typical Crapper double-speak. As much as I dislike Joe Biden.......this man actually makes my skin crawl.

although I do remember much of it - it was definitely a trip sort of wasted on a not quite 8 year old :)

The Dims are trying to frame this. They are trying to make it seem like getting money from an individual contributor is some CRIME (it is not) while pretending that getting money funnelled through conduits, like inidan tribes (something that can be a crime) is of no consequence.

A+. I spent some time yesterday reading a Steyn piece about the fall of the West, but it was mostly about Muslims. Nice tagline too.

LOL. At 8, if anybody pulled me away from my sandbox, I'd be unhappy.

There's a handy link in this article about unions and where they throw money.

I was taking ballet and tap at the time, but wasn't able to be in the recital because we were leaving a few days before. I really ticked off my parents because I refused to continue with them even though they were paid for.....my attitude was why bother if I can't be in the recital.

I was cantankerous even back then (and I wonder why my daughter, who is now the same age as I was then, is the way she is :))

Oh, I understand but I am hardly bilingual enough to post a reply that wouldn't get yanked, even if it were in spanish.

I learned my spanish from a work-release landscape crew when I was 15. NOT the kind of landscapers you want working around your kids!
