Packers will talk to Chargers' Phillips Posted: Wednesday January 4, 2006 12:37PM; Updated: Wednesday January 4, 2006 12:37PM
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will interview for the Green Bay Packers' vacant head coaching job Monday, an NFL source told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Phillips, who just concluded his second year as an assistant to Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer, was the Buffalo Bills' head coach from 1998-2000.
Phillips is one of several candidates expected to be interviewed by Packers general manager Ted Thompson, who fired coach Mike Sherman on Monday.
Thompson said during his news conference Monday he will speak to current Packers defensive coordinator Jim Bates about the job, but also appears to be casting a wide net outside the organization.
The Dallas Morning News reported that the Packers and New Orleans Saints had been granted permission to interview Cowboys offensive coordinator Sean Payton.
Former Chicago Bears linebacker Mike Singletary, another named tossed around in the Packers' rumor mill, said Tuesday that he had not been contacted by the Packers but has spoken to the Detroit Lions.
Gary O'Hagan, agent for former Detroit Lions coach Steve Mariucci, said the Packers have not contacted Mariucci as of Tuesday evening. Mariucci was the Packers' quarterbacks coach under Mike Holmgren.

His philosophy would be well suited to GB.
Had enough already?
Heck I bet the Saints job looks more attractive right now.
Im a Bears fan but Russ Grimm would make the most sense for GB. With the Rookie QB in the wings...
2-4 - Packers' playoff record under Sherman (includes the first 2 home playoff losses in team history, and 0-2 on the road)
2-4 - Packers' home opener record under Sherman
12-12 - Packers' regular-season home record 2003-2005 (1-1 playoffs those seasons)
Tell me again that Sherman's better than the alternative (unless, of course, that's giving both jobs to Ted E. Thompson, suuuuper genius).
How about "Gold crush"? :-)
I have always thought that the best available coach out there was Gary Kubiak, the OC from the Broncos.
the decision to fire your head coach can only make sense once you learn who the replacement is.
Why would they fire Sherman and hire a loser like Phillips?
ok, ok... IF the Packers could get Kubiak more power to them that would make a good fit with his running style and would be great for a rookie qb, if they cant secure him they need Grimm. :D
I would like to see Kubiak for The Chiefs, but I (a KC Fanatic) would like to see a defensive guru with a sharp mind on free agency. KC has the offense and special teams solved.
That could be true, but it's not like the NFL would inform the public. It was a silly idea to begin with.
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - list of assistants the Packers are interested (and not interested) in (before the Wade Phillips news) -
Yes it would.
Better.
I've heard his name mentioned for years.
I heard that Mike Tice and Steve Mariucci are available. If the Packers wait long enough, Dick Jauron should be on the market, too.
As a Broncos fan, I can honestly attest that Wade Philips was my least favorite head coach, but we all knew that he was keeping the seat warm for Mike Shanahan.
While Walter Payton may have been the fan favorite of the Bears in the 80's, Singletary was the heart and soul of that team. I remember during the games they would show close-ups on his eyes peering through that face guard. Talk about instensity!
I have no idea how he is as a coach, but I hope the Rams give him an interview.
The few Bill fans I know feel the same way about him.
