The games don't have nearly the marquee names as yesterday did, but there is a potential for some good games....
Did anyone catch the brawl in the walkway last night?
I would argue that they are already there.
The split Championship, is a bit of a slap. I believe had USC played LSU, as they should have, that there would have been no doubt in the outcome.
"The split championship, is a bit of a slap."
Ya know, it is what it is, and we accept it. Facts are, there are a whole bunch of teams claiming national titles over the last half century that were 'split', just because college football operates as it does. The reason why the media trumpets the USC 'half' of the 2003 title is that, first, the media voted for USC (so did the coaches, but that's another issue!!), but especially, what has happened since has reinforced the media's position. Let's face it, USC hasn't lost in two years since those days. Many in America recognized three years ago that this group was something special, and USC has backed up that impression by winning 34 straight games. I'm amazed that given what has happened since, there aren't more people considering LSU fortunate that they get to claim at least a half-title.
With only 1 win and a split you don't qualify as one of the greats IMHO. You can argue the split but that's a stretch considering football has always been plagued by the vagaries of the system. The hard truth has always been you need to win out to control your own destiny and even that's not always enough. If we go back and consider all of the polling crimes of the past we'd have no time for politics...or anything else for that matter. At the time while I felt SC was robbed but I wasn't prepared to take it away from Oklahoma and in the end LSU should have recieved their due. Bad luck for SC but the primary claim to that championship is LSU. The split was a cop out.
The Sooners get smacked the last game and still get to play for the glass football? LSU, enjoy what you have.....
After what USC did to OU in that game, there is no way you can ever convince anyone that LSU would have beat USC. Hell, even LSU knows that.
I think they changed the rule after that year. If you lose your conference championship game you're disqualified from the BCS championship game.
It's frustrating. Michigan and Nebraska fans argue about 1997, Miami and Washington fans about 1991, etc.
yeah....
the South Florida - NC State game was a dude so I turned on the OSU basketball game :)
Did LSU choke or was it just a great comeback by OSU?
It would be nice if the BCS computers would upgrade those 8086 chips they have.
I'd rather they just permanently crashed.
Good one, lets get back to reason and unwinnable arguments.
a little of both.
OSU finally started hitting 3 pointers and the youth of the LSU team showed up.
LSU made a couple mistakes, but OSU really just outplayed them in the final 3 minutes....
I generally agree. There are some truths shown by all-time records (for example, Michigan traditionally has a more successfull football program than Northwestern), but those are usually self-evident.
What precipitated my original research was a thread in which several posters stated that the Big 10 traditionally dominated all other conferences in bowl games. The Big 10 boosters presented a statement as being true over a period of years, not for a particular season.
That's what caused me to look at the six-year records, which disputed the "Big 10 Is Dominant" theory for that six-year period.
Not only do all-time records fail to tell you anything about the year-to-year play, but they disguise the changes in college football over the years. Remember when Army was always at or near the top? When the Ivy League was a powerhouse?
So I generally agree with you, MikeinIraq.
You've forgotten your history. LSU beat OU by 7 and USC beat a lesser Michigan by 14. LSU beats the #1 team all season and USC beats a reasonable but lesser Michigan team and folks want to give it to SC. LSU earned their share and has the better claim and what SC has done since is irrelevant to that discussion.
Hey, Mike! Are you doing a live Cotton Bowl thread?
I am going to do a live thread for all the games today....
it'll be up in a minute...
