Mayor: Second City would welcome second NFL team Associated Press click this
CHICAGO -- Mayor Richard Daley believes getting a second NFL franchise could enhance the city's chances of a successful bid for the 2016 Olympics.
Daley says bringing another football team to Chicago would make it more feasible to build a domed stadium with a capacity of at least 80,000. That would be a major component of the city's Olympics bid.
The renovated Soldier Field, home of the Chicago Bears, seats just 61,500.
The mayor said Thursday that a new stadium would have to be used after the Olympics and that a second NFL team would be a desirable tenant.
"This is a great city, a great sports town," Daley said. "If it can handle two baseball teams, it can easily handle two football teams."
Daley said he hasn't approached the NFL about a second franchise.
The IOC chooses the 2016 Olympic City in 2009. Daley plans to appoint a committee soon to determine what facilities and finances are needed to make Chicago a serious bidder.
Has he called Tom Benson?
The city only supports one baseball team, the Cubs.
Why does anyone think football would be any different?
The Cardinals decided Chicago couldn't support two teams over forty years ago.
Am I the only one who could care less about the Olympics?
Since the Soviet Union went belly up I haven't cared about the Olympics. I used to love rooting against those Commies.
I don't mind the games...I just can't stand all the tear jerking stories about the athletes.
Have you seen "Miracle"?
Sure Daley would love this! Some more money coming in for his corrupt administration!
I had always thought people on the southside were White Sox fans, at least, I met several in college who were.
His best shot would be to just wait for the Cardinals to come back.
Not until some sucker puts a team in LA.
Nope. I never watch them. Could not care less.
Yup. If the Saints go anywhere else it'll be there.
Try San Antonio.
Benson wants to move the team near HIMSELF.
He has also sworn he won't sell the team.
What makes Daley think that Bears fans are suddenly going to root for a different team, just because it moves to Chicago?
Nobody has cared for the Cardinals, either in Chicago, St Louis, or Arizona.
I know that's where he wants them but the league will fight him tooth and nail over that.
What a pitiful franchise.
Yea, but the league would lose.
Look at the Al Davis versus the NFL cases, and several other times where teams moved over the objections of the NFL and in at least one case, additional the objections of individuals teams plus the NFL.
