Another vote for late 70's Rush. From 2112 through Moving Pictures nobody comes close in terms of muscianship.
Agree on Rush. My current favorite is Wilco, out of Chicago. Love to listen to their "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" on head phones. It's a great CD.
My definition of prog rock: overly ambitious or pretentious attempts at breaking the traditional rock song structure that fail, and yet I still like listening to them. :)
I agree with may of the groups listed, but would add:
Kevin Gilbert (and his associated projects Giraffe, Toy Matinee, his solo stuff, and Giraffe's version of Genesis' The Lamb Lays Down on Broadway from progfest 94)
Now, my personaly favorites are in no order:
Later Yes
Early Jethro Tull
Shadow Gallery
ELO/ELP/Styx (only their early Wooden Nickel stuff)
Kansas
They might not count fully, but Blue Oyster Cult!
Alan Parsons Project
I tend to put Pink Floyd in its own section, i.e., best Pink Floydish band...the answer is of course, Pink Floyd.
Der Hirn Fanger, catching brains since 1989
bump
I forgot to mention Gentle Giant "In a Glass House" or "Three Friends"

I agree with Floyd. Up until the 80s, they were always two or three steps ahead of the game.
"Close to the Edge".........Yes, in general........absolutely. Hands down.
IMO, Rush is at the top of the heap. As a prog-rocking bassist/vocalist myself, I consider Geddy Lee to be my greatest influence. For those interested in something new, check out my stuff at

You can hear snippets of our newest CD on the site. It's a shameless plug but that's how word gets out.
Happy New Year, all!
"Supper's Ready" is my favorite song.
