Well, one way to freak out your cat is to stare at it with a fixed interested stare.
Cats, being predators, take a fixed stare as a trheat.
Usually, sincec they 'know' you to be one of their 'clan', they will trill and run up to you to see if you are okay.
Or they'll thrash their tail and charge.
