Welcome to the OFFICIAL Friday/Saturday Night Singles' Thread
"We're Gonna Have a Good Time Tonight...Let's Celebrate...It's All Right!"
In store for tonight (as proposed by apackof2):
To get our thread started, we're going to answer these questions:
1) "When and why did you join Free Republic?"
2) "What was going on at the time?" (Top movies, favorite song(s), price of gas, etc.)
3) "What happened on that day in history?"
Of possible further interest:

A special thanks to Paul_Denton for keeping the thread going in my absence.

Free Republic is the premier online gathering place for independent, grass-roots
conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse,
to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.
And we always have fun doing it. Hoo-yah!

I saw the clips on how they made Narnia......and the battle scene was too cool. It boggles the mind ... what they've done with graphics in the past 25 years! Gosh... I thought "Pong" was a marvel back then......*chuckle*

If I don't find a permanent job by spring, I may be moving again. Hoping it won't come to that, though - I just moved out here this past spring. I do like it here...except for the trouble finding a job part.
There are lots of FReepers in both areas, no? That's a plus!

Hey, your signup day has great significance - it's Fierce Allegiance Day! :)
To: scott7278
Agreed, but watch the original and remember that it was made in 1932 released in March of 1933.
The animation is pretty marvelous in comparison.

Or whip up a quick "Ode to an SUV" or "How doth I love my .45?" and go read it...see what the reaction is.

Oh, there's no doubt about that. When I watch old movies like that, you marvel at the technology that was employed for the time and what a delight it must have been.
It reminds me of The Statler Brothers' song, "The Movies."

What always impresses me about the effects in the older movies is how much they trick your imagination...they don't necessarily *show* violence or monsters on-screen, but they imply it so that your imagination fills in the blanks, and it's often far more vivid than if they actually showed something in detail. Just as one example, how scary is the shower scene in Psycho? I don't think it would have been *as* scary if they'd shown it in detail, let alone scarier.

Which reminds me, radio is actually my favorite medium. It forces you to use your imagination -- it's much more stimulating than television or the movies.

Wish they still did radio plays like they used to. Some of the British stations still do, but they're kind of a lost art form. We used to borrow them from the library on tape...that and the Jack Benny show and all the other early comedy shows.

I like the Cracker Barrel because they have those old radio shows on CD. I must confess, I am quite fond of my Red Skelton DVD's (I do enjoy watching him act).
