Word For The Day, Thursday, December 15, 2005 - chatoyant
dictionaries ad nauseum | December 15, 2005 | secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

chatoyant • \shuh-TOY-unt\ • adjective
: having a changeable luster or color with an undulating narrow band of white light

Example sentence:
The chest was opened to reveal a veritable treasure of glittering gold jewelry and chatoyant gems.

Etymology: The complex structure of a cat's eye not only enables it to see at night but also gives it the appearance of glowing in the dark. Not surprisingly, jewels that sport a healthy luster are often compared with the feline ocular organ, so much that the term "cat's-eye" is used to refer to those gems (such as chalcedony) that give off iridescence from within. If you've brushed up on your French lately, you might notice that the French word for "cat" ("chat") provides the first four letters of "chatoyant," a word used by jewelers to describe such lustrous gems. "Chatoyant" derives from the present participle of "chatoyer," a French verb that literally means "to shine like a cat's eyes."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Good grief - see what happens when a) I'm on the phone at an ungodly hour and b) following gossip on FR.....I'm late for class.

And I won't be here long....hubby's off today and we're going shopping.

the sexes should be prohibited from shopping together. i roll my eyes at women who have men in tow in the clothing depts in particular. they are invariably in the way. i consider shopping a solitary sport.

We're going to our favorite discount book store, his favorite discount card store and Michael's..........and no where else. Well, we are going to a real neat place near his office for lunch.

He had the audacity to suggest the mall to me the other day, and when I picked myself up from the floor after laughing, I asked "What for"? The subject has not come up again.

A missing person report would have to be issued for me if I were to venture into this particular bookstore alone..........I'm worse than in the library in there. I can literally spend HOURS in there.

i'm sure you will have a nice day. i just really don't like shopping with anyone else, no matter what kind of store. i have been much happier now that xsbrownie can go off with xsteen and look at what they want, and leave me to my own devices.

i just got an email from xsteen's HS saying they are monitoring the weather situation, school is currently in session but if the ice storm hits, i suppose they will dismiss them. worst of all possible scenarios, IMO, but i know they can't cancel school on a mere possibility of bad weather.

my one exception to this rule is when my SIL comes to visit and we go to my local xs shop. she doesn't have one near her, so she is thrilled to go and i enjoy her company there.
