The Hobbit Hole XXVI - Home is behind, the world ahead
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 12/11/2005 8:37:40 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Home is behind, the world ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

You know, I tried the crying and shrieking right back thing and it didn't work. Maybe it's because it's ~me~ doing it. hehehehe...

The "lights out / door shut" treatment works and the results are great, but the carrying out of that particular discipline tears my heart out.

I'm pretty sure they know I'm a soft-hearted fool and hate to see them cry, so they push until Roaring Mother Bear emerges. :-D

Maybe I should try watching "Cannibal the Musical" next time. The girls might be scared into listening just with the threat of having to watch it with me. ;-)

Heh...something tells me that, being kids, they'd be fascinated by the sick and gory idea of it.

So maybe that wouldn't work. ;-)

True.

My sister allows her son to play Resident Evil games (which end up being played here while I'm at work), so the whole "Scary Flesh-Eating Zombie" thing wouldn't faze Rebecca, I'm afraid.

That said, she'll flee in terror from a strange sound.

It's only what she ~can't~ see that frightens her.

Hmm... well dunno how to fix it, other than to keep at it. I'm sure it gets easier after a while. [sip]

That's what I keep hoping!

After all, my mom doesn't have to shut the door and turn out the light to get me to bed anymore. :-D

Anyway, what's your plan for New Year's?

Open up a big box of snakes, then tell them through the bedroom door that they'll want to keep the door shut or the snakes will get in. And they better keep the light off too, since the little snakes are drawn to lights under the door. They could put a towel across to keep the little snakes out.

New year's? Plan? uh... when is it again? Saturday, right?

Dunno. No plan.

Wicked! Alyson would probably try to snuggle with one, since she loves "No Feet" - a cartoon snake on Little Bear. :-D

I don't keep the door shut and lights off though. I go in, turn off the lamp, shut the door while walking out. I hold the door shut and count to 10.

By the time I re-open the door, they've been reduced to sniveling sobs. I leave the door open after that and walk away, with a threat to return and shut it if I hear another peep.

Does the trick! But those are a ~very~ long 10 seconds to me.

Heh...have you ever heard that Bill Cosby skit where his Dad tells him there are invisible poisonous snakes around his bed, and if he gets out, they'll bite him and he'll swell up and die?

Yeah, Saturday.

I don't like to be out and about on "Amateur Night" with the folks who don't drink a drop all year and then decide to tie one on and drive all over town.

Trini's brother is having a pig-roast at his place, so I'll more than likely end up there since it's kid friendly. But I expect to be home before the ball drops to avoid the drunk drivers / grumpy police at checkpoints.

Do folks fire off fireworks by the beach house?

I'm sure Hair and ecurbh are ~so~ looking forward to Saturday night. /s

Gotta love Bill Cosby...

We had a couple records of his when I was growing up. Wore 'em out.

I remember playing "Chicken Heart" over and over, but ironically being *scared* by it. We'd listen to it from behind the couch. Heh...

I've never lived anywhere big before on New Years. I'm really hoping it isn't scary getting home...i.e. that there aren't crazies out and that I don't end up going through a checkpoint. I've never even SEEN a checkpoint, let alone had to do that before.

Maybe I can figger out a back way to home home. Though...that won't necessarily be better, I guess.

I'd stick to main roads, chica. The drunks use the back roads to avoid the checkpoints. *grin*

Checkpoints aren't a bad thing, but they are a royal pain in the rear.

Yah. I don't like to be out and about either.

There's a few of the neighbors that blow off some fireworks. Not too much. There'll be a few that do the stick-of-dynamite thing. That's always good for a jolt.

Not like the fourth of July though.

Hair's probly gonna have to stock up on the doggie-downers for Gidg. She's a nut with 'splosions.

I'm not a big fan of checkpoints. They don't use them here, but they did use them in Virginia when I was posted there for several months. Hated it.

Yeah, that's kinda what I was afraid of. Doing a checkpoint would be a little scary, but at least they ain't likely to get you killed...
