That sounds very nice, NYCynic. I wouldn't post my personal home number, though; is there a lost and found where you could see if anyone has lost the exact amount? If no one has, tell lost and found you will check back with them. Maybe you, or they, could put up a sign to check with lost and found if anyone was missing money. I understand your reluctance what with it being NY but it is the same anywhere. Never give out your home number or agree to meet the person(s) yourself...go through the authorities.

P.S. I think it might have been mine...yeah, I'm pretty sure I lost some money lately!

Put the money in your checking account, write a check for the same amount and put THAT into the collection plate for your tax deduction.

(A friend of mine found a $5000 chip on the sidewalk in front of a major casino in VEGAS, he cashed it in the next day and kept the cash.)
