Interesting article. I have not for a few years keep track of new CPU design philosophies nor what we used to call firmware in essence.
Things surely have advanced well beyond what even six years ago was considered beam me up scotty. I find it interesting that companies have somehow been able to keep up with Moores Law. With packing densities as they are, it is a wonder the silicon doesn't start melting! Lots of power being confined in such a small area. Power laws don't change. We reach limits on gate size within each generation of processing design.
I am amazed things have reached the point they are. I remember back at the Labs in about mid 80's when one of my brother's team announced they where not sure if they could ever break the .2u channel width in the MOS procesess they where using.
At any rate, for what I can say I actually understood, it was an interesting article.
