PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. (CP) - A man who admitted to shooting a Manitoba RCMP officer in the face has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Michael Gary Regamy, 24, told Court of Queen's Bench he was sorry for the shooting of Const. Mike Templeton almost four years ago.
Justice Albert Clearwater called the shooting a serious crime but said Regamy can be rehabilitated.
Clearwater agreed with a joint recommendation from the Crown and defence that the 12 years run concurrent with a sentence Regamy is already serving on other charges.
Regamy, who is originally from Edmonton, was in a stolen car with two other people on Feb. 22, 2002, near Portage la Prairie, Man. Five shots were fired at Templeton when he tried to pull over the vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway.
One bullet went through the officer's nose and lodged near his spine, but he has fully recovered and will start touring with the RCMP's musical ride next spring.
??
An example of Canada's "justice" system.
Unfortunately, not much different from ours. How many times have we noted a Judge giving a criminal a slap on the wrist for shooting a cop? too many.
Really? You guys state side have problems with judges with liberal mentalities like this?
In Canada there seems to be a trend to give youth criminals sentences that are filled under house arrest. That just puts the frosting on the cake for me.
