USGA decisions on the rules of golf 1-4/10 reads, "1-4/10 Dangerous Situation; Rattlesnake or Bees Interfere with Play

Q. A player’s ball comes to rest in a situation dangerous to the player, e.g., near a live rattlesnake or a bees’ nest. Does the player have any options in addition to playing the ball as it lies or, if applicable, proceeding under Rule 26 or 28?
A. Yes. It is unreasonable to expect the player to play from such a dangerous situation and unfair to require the player to incur a penalty under Rule 26 (Water Hazards) or Rule 28 (Ball Unplayable).
In equity (Rule 1-4), as an additional option the player should be permitted, without penalty, to drop a ball on the nearest spot not nearer the hole which is not dangerous.
If the ball lay in a hazard, it should be dropped, if possible, in the same hazard and, if not, in a similar nearby hazard, but in either case not nearer the hole. If it is not possible for the player to drop the ball in a hazard, he may drop it, under penalty of one stroke, outside the hazard, keeping the point where the original ball lay between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped.
If it is clearly unreasonable for the player to play a stroke because of interference by anything other than the dangerous situation he may not take relief as prescribed above, but he is not precluded from proceeding under Rule 26 or 28."

I'm not as familiar with the circumstances surrounding the second incident that you cite. But clearly, in the first instance she was entitled to relief.

Get over it.

The issue is that her exemptions and playing in men's tournaments prevents a man from earning money as a professional in his sport.

Michelle's appearance juices interest and tv ratings and makes men's golf more profitable. She is helping the sponsors and advertisers justify paying the purses and is helping mens golf and increasing the purse size available to the men.

I would think that anybody would be excited to see any President of the United States. I met President Bush 1, was on President Clinton's Inaugural Committee (military, no choice, but still found it exciting), and President Bush 2 and was happy to see all of them. Most Americans have never met a President. She would have been happy to see any President.

Gee, for me, her appearance in a men's tournament would have the opposite effect.

Granted she is very young, but if she keeps missing the cut on the men's tours, it will be interesting to see if that continues.

I concur. She will likely never admit it, but I figure that one of the saddest days in Anna Kournikova's life had to be when Maria Sharapova won it all at Wimbledon. Kournikova's pulchritude exceeded her game; Sharapova has both. At match point, Anna K. became Anna Who?

She will almost certainly make the cut at this year's sony open. It is in Hawaii, it is her home course, when she was 14 she missed the cut there by 1 stroke and her game is much much better now. Although she missed the cut that year, she did finish ahead of adam scott by 2 strokes and tied jim furck. Adam Scott just finished playing the skins game last week with Couples, Woods and Sorenstam.

Don't count on her beating Scott this year. He finished 3 under in this year's Sony Open, and while he missed five cuts in 2004, he's only missed one in 2005 and placed first in the Nissan Open.

Think by next year's Sony Open, Wie will have managed to win an LPGA tournament?

No, because by next year's sony open, she will still be in school. The only reason she plays the sony is because it is close. She will play very few events in the lpga until summer. She might squeeze in one tournament during spring break.

If there are lpga events over christmas/new years, she might play them too.

She is 16, a girl, and can play with the guys.

All I need to know about women's golf I learned here:

Fill in your own punchlines here. I don't follow golf.

How bad is it when you win a tournament, and because of one photog's incredibly poor angle, you become an international sex gag?

What's even worse is the pun in your use of the word "gag".

Cheers!
