White Sox to deal Rowand for Phillies' Thome ESPN.com news services

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Phillies reached a preliminary agreement Wednesday to send Jim Thome and cash to the World Series champion Chicago White Sox for center fielder Aaron Rowand.

The deal, first reported by ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney, is subject to the players passing physicals, the Phillies said.

Thome, an oft-injured first baseman, is owed $43.5 million in the final three seasons of his contract. He hit .207 with seven homers and 30 RBI in just 193 at-bats last season and became expendable after the emergence of Ryan Howard, who won the NL Rookie of the Year award.

Thome, 35, is due about $12.5 million in 2006 and $14 million in each of the final two seasons of his six-year contract. The Phillies have a club option for 2009, and he has a no-trade clause. Rowand, 28, set career highs in 2004 by hitting .310 with 38 doubles, 24 homers and 69 RBI.

He became eligible for salary arbitration for the first time after making $340,000 in 2004, and signed a new contract with the White Sox in January.

He earned $2 million in 2005 and is expected to receive $3.25 million in 2006. Chicago has a club option for 2007 at $5 million and Rowand holds a player option for 2007 at $3.25 million.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Does this mean the ChiSox don't expect to re-sign Konerko?

I haven't heard any rumblings about him coming to Boston lately. They have to deal with Manny first.

Probably not, although it is a backup plan. From what I read, the Phillies agreed to pay $24 to $27 million of Thomes salary, leaving the White Sox share at about 5.5 to 6 million a year. Good bet that Frank Thomas and Carl Everett will have to find new teams next year.

If Konerko signs with the Sox, why would they have to say goodbye to him?

Oh, maybe you mean the OTHER Sox, that bunch of also-rans from Boston, not the World Champion Chicago White Sox.

I enjoyed watching the Pale-Hose slice-and-dice the Blo-Sox in 3 games. It was pure fundamental baseball at its best.

Ok..I do remember that now. I guess I forgot because evidently very few people cared to observe the occasion by actually watching the World Series. Must suck to throw a party and have nobody show up.

Fundimental? I don't remember seeing a single double-switch in that whole series. :)

I wouldn't say a total of nearly 70 million viewers--an average of over 17 million per game--is "very few." True, it was a drop-off from the previous Eastern-media-hyped year, but that one had spiked up from the preceding few. And as cable has proliferated since the early '80s, WS shares--along with a lot of other previously-dominant programming--have declined, compared to the glory years of only three networks to choose from.

Must suck to throw a party and have nobody show up.

No, not at all. Lots and lots of Chicagoans got very excited about this. And nearly 2 million showed up in person for the victory rally!

Good to see Thome coming back to the AL. Maybe I will even take a jaunt down to Jacobs Field when the ChiSox come to Cleveland. Hopefully Thome can rebound from his back problems of last year. I had no problem with the Indians not signing him to a long-term deal back in '02, due to his age and injury history, but Thome is as good a guy as there is in the big leagues.
