A former Rock Bridge High School teacher pleaded guilty today to molestation for sexually touching a 16-year-old student last summer while the two were on school property.
Burke Judy Burke, 51, of Hartsburg received a six-month suspended sentence and was placed on two years of supervised probation after she admitted that she touched the teenager’s penis through his clothes. The former special education teacher was taken to the Boone County Jail, where conditions of her probation require a 30-day stay. However, Burke will most likely be released after 15 days and serve the remainder of her jail time on home detention, Assistant Prosecutor Richard Hicks said.
After Columbia police arrested Burke in August, she was placed on leave, and she later resigned.
Hicks said that in court today Burke admitted she had a prior felony conviction, referring to a guilty plea she made in 1980 to selling a controlled substance. She was placed on probation and given a suspended imposition of sentence.
Other conditions of Burke’s probation include having no contact with any minor except her own children and having no contact with the victim. She also must undergo a sex offender evaluation and attend counseling if recommended. She will be registered as a sex offender and ordered to pay court costs.
