The Red Sox and Marlins have come to a tentative agreement on a trade that would send Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell to Boston for shortstop Hanley Ramirez, right-handed prospect Anibal Sanchez and a minor-league pitcher.
The deal is contingent on the finalization of paperwork and all players passing physicals, sources outside the Red Sox organization have told ESPN's Peter Gammons. An official announcement is not expected for a day or two, which leaves open the possibility that it could still fall apart, Gammons said on SportsCenter.
Only some last-minute haggling over dollars appeared to be holding up the deal, a baseball official with knowledge of the discussions told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark. Florida would include cash in the trade to offset some of the $18 million owed to Lowell over the next two seasons.
In return, the Red Sox would give up Ramirez, their much-ballyhooed shortstop prospect, and Sanchez. The Marlins originally had targeted left-hander Jon Lester, but Boston balked at including him in the trade, so the Red Sox agreed to add a second minor leaguer if Florida took Sanchez instead, Stark reports.
SNIP
Beckett went 15-8 with a 3.38 ERA last season, when he had problems with his shoulder and recurring blisters on his right middle finger.
Lowell hit .236 with eight homers and 58 RBI while winning the NL Gold Glove at third base last season. He averaged 24 homers and 94 RBI per season in the five years before that.
Beckett is expected to earn between $4 million and $5 million next season.

Oh that's payroll. Ha! Never mind......
You are trading Miller and Mueller for Youk and Lowell who was a former Gold Glover and had a bad year. Interesting to see what next year brings. (Maybe a juice guy???) You lose Fatso but get Beckett in return plus you can likely get Roberts back along with maybe some good late game relief help. In the end it costs them an extra few million which isn't a bad thing.
the Marlins will be holding yet another firesale. They are going to dump Delgado and they will lose Alex Gonzalez to free agency. They let Burnett go for nothing but draft picks and if they decided to dump D-Train they could likely get a bunch more. Call them the Tampa Bay Devil Rays of the East Coast of Florida.
Not if they are smart....
Damon will be 36 years in 4 years from now and reminding everyone of Bernie Williams.

That's why I wonder what the Sox scouts think about his woes ......
yep
LOL
He could bounce back.
And he won't get fried in the Florida heat in August like he does every year in Miami....
I just keep thinking about Bernie Williams in the last year of his contract. Plus, Damon has bad shoulders. You are buying 2 more good years then after that it becomes a crap shoot. If they are going to go with better pitching then Roberts makes sense because he can manufacture runs. Moneyball doesn't buy that style but without it, the Sox don't win game 4 or 5 for that matter of the 04 ALCS.
I can't wait to read about this in the Globe...the paper that reported that "Theo Epstein signed a new three year contract", and that Red Sox games are on "WEEI-FM 850" (sic; still trying to find 850 on an FM dial :))
Hey, let's trade for this great pitcher Larry Andersen. We'll send them this Bagwell kid. He won't amount to anything :)
FYI..somewhat related news..Michael Kaye, the Yankees TV broadcaster, on his ESPN-NY radio show yesterday proposed that the Yankees sign Nmarr to play centerfield..
Of course they'll loose Fatso, Damon and Manny.
I fear for 2006...
He could do even more damage to himself out there.
"Play Papi at first more"
I am concerned about his durability as an everyday fielder. I agree with all of your other points - particularly Nixon - a gamer but prone to back injuries.
Thanks for the Red Sox ping.
Beckett is a proven young arm in the majors with good stuff and I like him for beating the Yankees in the WS back in 2003. Thanks to Theo we have Rentawreck at SS for 3 more years and no one will take that contract off our hands. It's a good trade for Boston in the end.
Losing Damon and Manny would open up about $24 million in payroll. Give half to Paul Konerko and you still can get 2 outfielders for what's left. Plus, when you dump Manny you get Henly Ramirez quality prospects back.
The Red Sox were an old and tired team last year. Their pitching was broken down and there was no juice left. The 3 year run has passed and Chicago, Cleveland Oakland are the teams to match up with.
Well... He can pitch just fine in Yankee stadium so that's a plus if you're a BoSox fan!
there is that....
but I wonder about his blister problems.....
